NEC Nijmegen makes history. |
On May 17th, a 2-0 victory against Go Ahead Eagles, coupled with Twente's slip-up at PSV Eindhoven, allowed the Nijmegen team to conclude the 2025/26 season in jubilation.
Before the final matchday, Twente held the advantage in the race for the top 3 with 2 points more than NEC. However, everything reversed dramatically after just the first 45 minutes. At their home ground, Goffertstadion, NEC started strongly and opened the scoring in the 12th minute thanks to a header from Noe Lebreton.
Shortly after, more good news arrived for NEC when PSV took the lead against Twente in Eindhoven. The atmosphere at the Goffert Stadium immediately erupted as fans realized their beloved team was close to securing a historic Champions League spot.
NEC completely dominated Go Ahead Eagles. Bryan Linssen nearly doubled the lead with a shot that hit the crossbar, before Lebreton completed his brace at the end of the first half.
While NEC soared, Twente succumbed to pressure from PSV and lost 1-5. The Goffert Stadium erupted at the end of the match. NEC finished third, their highest achievement in the club's history, and qualified for the Champions League for the first time, despite starting from the third qualifying round.
Conversely, Ajax continued to experience a disastrous season. The most traditional club in the Netherlands failed to beat Heerenveen and had to accept playing in the Conference League play-offs.
