Strengthening the implementation of solutions for successful brackish water shrimp farming

Việt NamViệt Nam07/11/2023

STO - Currently, Soc Trang province has stocked brackish water shrimp on more than 50,129/51,000ha, reaching over 98% of the plan and equal to 94% over the same period, of which the white-leg shrimp area is more than 37,399ha, and black tiger shrimp is more than 12,730ha. The damaged shrimp farming area is 2,116ha (580ha lower than the same period), accounting for 4.2% of the farming area. The main causes of damage are white spot disease, environmental factors, hepatopancreatic disease, microsporidia and white feces...

According to statistics from the provincial Department of Agriculture , the brackish water shrimp farming area in the province is over 37,711 hectares, accounting for over 75% of the farming area, with an output of over 206,700 tons (white-leg shrimp over 184,500 tons, black tiger shrimp over 22,200 tons), 2.3% lower than the shrimp output of the same period. Currently, the shrimp area in the fields is about 10,302 hectares.

Comrade Lu Tan Hoa - Deputy Head of the Soc Trang Fisheries Sub-Department said: “This year's brackish water shrimp farming season is progressing slowly compared to 2022, reaching over 92% of the plan. The reason is that the salinity on the rivers is late at the beginning of the year; the price of raw shrimp is continuously decreasing... while the cost of input materials, such as: feed, breeds, environmental treatment products is increasing. In addition, shrimp farmers have difficulty accessing loans from credit institutions to renovate and invest in model conversion because most small-scale farming households no longer have collateral. Linking product consumption is still limited, most shrimp farming households are small-scale, do not have enough output to be purchased by the company at the pond, so they have to sell shrimp through traders. The environment and water quality for aquaculture are not guaranteed, increasing the cost of environmental treatment, diseases, thereby reducing production profits and increasing risks".

Faced with the common difficulties of the 2023 shrimp farming season, comrade Ma Chi Tho - Head of the Economic Department of Vinh Chau town informed that currently, in Vinh Chau town, shrimp farming has been harvested on an area of 19,000 hectares, reaching an output of over 85,000 tons, while 6,000 hectares are being farmed and newly released. To support shrimp farmers in the situation of falling shrimp prices, increasing feed prices... the unit has implemented solutions focusing on closely monitoring the farming situation, as well as recommending that households spread out shrimp farming and pay attention to weather developments; stocking at appropriate and moderate density; trying to accumulate capital to buy input materials. Along with that, open training courses to transfer science and technology to farming households. Strengthen inspection, examination and management of feed provided for shrimp farming in the town.

In order for the brackish water shrimp farming season in the province to achieve the set plan, according to Mr. Huynh Ngoc Nha - Provincial Party Committee member, Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Soc Trang, the provincial agricultural sector will continue to effectively implement the 2017 Fisheries Law, especially speeding up the progress of granting registration certificates for key farming objects and cages according to Decree No. 26/2019/ND-CP, dated March 8, 2019 of the Government detailing a number of articles and measures to implement the Fisheries Law. Strengthen inspection and examination work to promptly prevent and strictly handle violations of the law on production and trading of aquatic materials that do not ensure quality. Promote the role of cooperatives and cooperatives in concentrating and cooperating into large raw material production areas according to responsible and safe production standards such as: VietGAP, GlobalGAP, ASC, BAP ... to improve product quality; At the same time, connect with input material suppliers linked to the consumer market, following the value chain to reduce costs and ensure product output.

At the same time, the provincial Department of Agriculture will continuously innovate the propaganda work on the form, content and methods of transferring science and technology to aquaculture farmers in a timely and effective manner. Carry out the work of building and expanding new farming models, solutions and farming technologies that adapt to climate change conditions. Strengthen environmental monitoring and warning work in concentrated shrimp farming areas, to promptly issue warnings and recommendations to help shrimp farmers minimize damage when the weather is unfavorable. Raise awareness of digital transformation, as well as encourage shrimp farmers to apply digital technology to production.
