Beijing could put the first of a new series of amphibious assault ships into service by the end of 2026, a Chinese military expert said.

In a program broadcast on China Central Television (CCTV) on January 4, Shao Yongling, a former professor at the Rocket Force Command Academy of the People's Liberation Army, said that the planes could conduct test flights taking off from the country's newest aircraft carrier this year.
Ms. Thieu Vinh Linh made the above prediction after Beijing launched the first Type 076 ship late last month. The ship has the hull number 51 and is named after Sichuan province in southwest China.
After the overall hull and propulsion system are completed, the ship will undergo equipment installation, mooring trials and sea trials.
“It could take more than a year to install the equipment and conduct testing before conducting sea trials,” said Ms. Thieu Vinh Linh. “If everything goes smoothly and quickly, the Sichuan could be ready for operation by the end of 2026. If it is a little slower, I think it would be okay to push it back to mid-2027.”
