Peaceful Tet in a fishing village on Ha Long Bay

Báo Đại Đoàn KếtBáo Đại Đoàn Kết31/01/2025

On New Year's Day, I had the opportunity to visit Vung Vieng, a fishing village rated by international press as one of the 16 most beautiful fishing villages in the world . The scenery is peaceful, the space is quiet, completely different from the city streets.

Vung Vieng is no longer a crowded floating village. Since 2012, the Ha Long City government has relocated households here to settle on the mainland. Up to now, Vung Vieng is home to 27 households that raise aquatic products.

Although not as densely populated as before, the “soul” of the old floating village is still almost intact. There are floating houses on rafts made of bamboo and wood; there is the sound of fishing nets hitting the cliffs; there is the image of a woman rowing a boat carrying her child through the stone village gate…

Coming to Vung Vieng during Tet, I felt like I was completely shaken off the dust of the bustling city, to immerse myself in an extremely peaceful and rustic space.

In the minds of Ha Long fishermen, Vung Vieng is still a small village with nearly 30 houses, surrounded by rocky mountains like gods protecting the fishermen.

A particularly impressive feature is the village "gate", the entrance to Vung Vieng fishing village.

The means of transportation in the village are small foam rafts.

The sea water here is clear and calm all year round like a lake.

On the afternoon of the 30th of Tet, Mr. Vu Gia Lam (a resident of Vung Vieng fishing village) caught the best grouper to offer at the end of the year and celebrate Tet.

For Mr. Lam, life in Vung Vieng has become familiar and attached.

Although life on rafts is cramped, Vung Vieng people still reserve the most solemn space to worship gods and ancestors.

Goodbye Vung Vieng, the peaceful scenery here still makes me nostalgic.
