Claude Code's 'Disaster'

Anthropic quietly removed Claude Code from its Pro plan without prior notice, sparking outrage among developers. The company later confirmed it was a test involving approximately 2% of new users.

On April 22nd, Anthropic's pricing page unexpectedly changed, with the $20- per-month Pro package no longer including Claude Code, the company's AI programming tool. The change occurred without prior notice to users.

The issue quickly spread across programmer forums and social media. Many Pro plan users expressed frustration because they had subscribed to the service partly based on this feature. Others argued that Anthropic was "encouraging" them to switch to cheaper Chinese AI models like Minimax, Qwen, or Kimi.

Following the backlash, Amol Avasare, Chief Growth Officer of Anthropic, posted an explanation on X.

"We are running a small test with about 2% of new users who sign up for the Pro plan. Those currently using the Pro and Max plans are not affected," he said.

Avasare acknowledged that Anthropic's communication regarding this matter was not good and committed to improving. "When we decide to make any adjustments that affect current users, you will be fully informed," Avasare wrote.

Avasare also explained the underlying reason for the aforementioned experiment. When Anthropic launched its Max package a year ago, Claude Code didn't exist. AI agents running for hours continuously weren't yet common. Since then, usage per subscriber has skyrocketed after the release of Claude Opus 4.6 and the explosion of the OpenClaw tool, leading millions of developers to create continuous-running AI agents using the Claude model.

The core issue appears to be that Anthropic's subscription packages are charging less than the actual value of the tokens consumed, sometimes by as much as 10 times or more. Anthropic introduced usage limits last month to encourage users to operate during off-peak hours, similar to how power companies manage electricity consumption. This latest experiment suggests the company is considering more drastic usage restrictions.

It's worth noting that the change hasn't been updated uniformly across the entire Anthropic system. The Claude Code product page still states that the Pro package has access to this tool.

"This inconsistency raises questions about Anthropic's ability to manage its product and internal communications during a period of rapid growth," writes Claburn of The Register .
