According to the AP news agency, the tragedy occurred at a secondary school in Basorun, Oyo state, near the economic hub of Lagos, after event organizers announced plans to distribute cash to 5,000 children, leading to a chaotic stampede to enter the school grounds where the fair was taking place.
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde said security forces were at the scene and arrested the event organizers.
According to Mr. Makinde, the state authorities have launched an investigation to find out the cause of the stampede, adding: "Anyone directly or indirectly involved in this tragedy will be held accountable."
In a statement released shortly afterwards, state information minister Dotun Oyelade blamed the tragic incident on lack of planning and coordination by private event organizers, Xinhua news agency reported. The official confirmed that the victims were mostly children.
According to Mr. Oyelade, the government of this country " was not involved" in any planning activities for the organization of this fair, while the Ministry of Health also did not receive a request from the organizers to provide any logistical services to support the fair.
Nigerian authorities have yet to release a full list of victims as the children were taken to various hospitals across Ibadan for treatment.
Local media reported that the event's organizer, the Women in Need of Guidance and Support Foundation, had organized a similar event for children in 2023.
