Mr. Huynh Ky Tam contributed 1,500 square meters of land for the construction of a road and embankment along Ong Le canal.

1. Born and raised in the border region, having participated in the fighting to protect the southwestern border, veteran Huynh Ky Tam (residing in Binh Hiep commune) understands the value of peace better than anyone else.

Sipping tea on the shady veranda, the veteran gazed into the distance: “The value of life today is immeasurable. My comrades have fallen on the battlefield, including those who fought from the North to the South. Even now, in the martyrs' cemetery, there are still graves whose identities have not been found. The fact that we have what we have today, with enough to eat and wear, is something my comrades and I have always dreamed of.”

Having experienced hardships during wartime, upon returning to peacetime, Mr. Tâm devoted himself to contributing to the development of his homeland, from setting an example by donating land and contributing funds to projects to participating in advocacy and propaganda work.

The lush green rice paddies and orchards promising a bountiful harvest today are the result of months of hard work, diligence, and dedication to the common good by Mr. Tam and all the people in his community.

Mr. Huynh Ky Tam (far left) meets and chats with officials of Binh Hiep commune. He acts as a "bridge" between the government and the people.

Pointing towards the road and embankment along Ong Le canal, Mr. Tam recounted: “Before, this road was only passable on foot. To bring fertilizer to the fields, we had to carry each small bag on our shoulders. But now, it's a road that also serves as an embankment, protecting the rice crops while facilitating transportation. 4-5 ton trucks can now reach the fields. Just this alone shows how much the lives of the people have improved. My 2 hectares of rice fields are within the embankment, and I'm part of a cooperative, signing a contract with a business for guaranteed purchase, so production and sales are easy and convenient. Farmers grow the same rice variety, and fertilizing and spraying pesticides are all done simultaneously using machines, so farmers no longer have to work as hard as before.”

To ensure the road and embankment were built and effectively utilized, Mr. Tam, along with the local people, wholeheartedly donated land for the road construction. As the head of the Veterans' Association branch in Go Dua hamlet and entrusted with the task of mobilizing support, Mr. Tam set a good example by donating over 1,500 square meters of his family's land for the road and embankment.

Following Mr. Tam's example, and seeing the effectiveness of previous projects in the area, the people unanimously agreed to donate land. As a result, the project was completed exactly as planned! "The way the government works has earned people's trust, so now when it comes to building roads, dikes, or pumping stations, the people all support it," Mr. Tam said with a smile, his face sparkling with joy.

2. While the story of veteran Huynh Ky Tam exemplifies the spirit of a soldier of Uncle Ho in peacetime, in another corner of the border region, Mr. Nguyen Chi Trai (residing in Hamlet 3, Tuyen Binh Commune) represents the image of a farmer and Party member who constantly strives to overcome hardship.

The road along the southern bank of Canal 28 is one of the rural roads and bridges that Mr. Nguyen Chi Trai helped mobilize people to donate land and contribute funds.

Having settled in Tuyen Binh in 1988, Mr. Trai started with over 1 hectare of uncultivated land. Without machinery, he and his wife had to use manual labor to improve the land. In 1989, he decided to buy a used tractor, despite having to borrow money at high interest rates to pay for fuel and repairs. “Back then, renting a tractor was very expensive, so I thought, I have to own one myself to be in control of my farming,” Mr. Trai recalled.

The old tractor quickly became a "companion," serving not only his family but also other households in their farming... Thanks to this, production became easier, and his family's economy gradually stabilized.

From just 1 hectare of land when he first started his business, Mr. Trai now owns 30 hectares of rice fields in Tuyen Binh. But what makes the people of Hamlet 3 remember Mr. Trai is not only his diligence and creativity, but also his exemplary character as a Party member.

In 2008, Mr. Trai joined the Party and then participated in village affairs, serving as Party Branch Secretary and Village Head for many years. He was a pioneer in various movements, especially in mobilizing people to donate land for road construction and contribute to building rural bridges, etc.

In the past, when Mr. Trai first started his life in this area, there was a wide canal in front of his house, and the road leading to the hamlet was just a small dirt road. When the road construction project was announced, Mr. Trai, in his role as Party Secretary, formed a team to go from house to house persuading people to donate land for the road. Thanks to this, a wide, concrete road was built, allowing cars to reach the alley leading to his house.

"To build this road, each household living along it had to move their house fence 15 meters inward. Thanks to the people's cooperation, we now have the road as it is," Mr. Trai shared.

People like Mr. Trai and Mr. Tam are respected figures in the local community. Through their efforts and practical actions, individuals like Mr. Tam and Mr. Trai serve as a strong "bridge" between the people and the local government.
