Yu Zidi won her first world medal after qualifying for the women's 4x200m freestyle relay. Despite not being selected to compete in the final, Yu qualified for bronze thanks to an impressive performance in the morning's qualifying session.
The Chinese team finished third overall with a time of 7 minutes 42.99 seconds, winning the bronze medal, behind the Australian (gold) and American (silver) teams. With this achievement, Yu Zidi became the youngest swimmer to win a medal at a world championships since 1936.
"It feels so emotional to be selected to compete in the qualifying round. I hope to improve my personal performance even more," Yu shared.
Later that evening, Yu missed out on her first individual medal by a razor-thin margin, finishing fourth in the women's 200-meter butterfly in 2:6.43. Summer McIntosh (Canada) won gold in 2:1.99, while Regan Smith (USA) won silver in 2:4.99, and Elizabeth Dekkers (Australia) finished third in 2:6.12 - just 0.31 seconds ahead of Yu.
Previously, Yu also lost the bronze medal in the 200m individual medley because he was only 0.06 seconds behind the third place finisher. Yu still has a chance to get on the podium again in the 400m individual medley. Yu's performance made experts and fans admire him.
"I was overwhelmed by her speed," Romanian swimming star David Popovici told Xinhua. "When I was 12, I also held the national record in the 200m medley, but I was still seven seconds slower than Yu Zidi."
