Uong Bi Coal: Building a safety culture among miners

The underground production environment has many potential risks, therefore, occupational safety and health (OSH) is always given special attention by Uong Bi Coal Company - TKV and considered as a top priority. With more than 4,800 employees, the Company has built and effectively operated a network of 522 OSH officers, arranged in 196 production teams, becoming a solid "shield" to protect workers.

Presently   now,   Occupational safety and health work at Uong Bi Coal Company is facing many challenges: complex geology, fluctuating coal seams, mining deeper and farther; constant risk of gas explosions and water leaks... Meanwhile, many new workers are from remote areas, with limited qualifications and industrial style.

From that practice, the company has increased inspections at the end of shifts - the time when workers are tired and prone to violating procedures. Safety and hygiene officer   assigned special tasks to mentor new workers, guide student interns, and impart practical experience to minimize risks.

Mr. Nguyen Van Linh (K11 Mining - Tunneling Workshop) has more than 10 years of experience in safety and hygiene work. , shared: “The job of a safety and hygiene officer is to remind colleagues to follow the process, promptly detect risks and propose solutions. I always keep in mind that only when the production shift ends and everyone returns safely, that is the greatest success.”

Thanks to the dedication of safety workers like Mr. Linh, K11 Mining and Excavation Workshop has maintained its safety record for many years. At the company-level competition for excellent safety workers, the workshop won second prize.

Not only does the network of safety and hygiene workers play a good role in supervision, it also becomes a bridge between workers and managers. Mr. Pham Van Manh, Manager of the K11 Mining and Excavation Workshop, affirmed: The team of safety and hygiene workers has become an extension of the manager in site management. Thanks to their close supervision, exemplary role and responsibility, the workshop has maintained a safe record for many years, without any serious incidents.

The company's union also constantly innovates the method of managing safety and hygiene workers. In addition to regular reports, the safety and hygiene worker network also sends recommendations via zalo group for the union and leaders to grasp and handle quickly. The recommendations are recorded in production orders and shift reports, ensuring thorough resolution.

According to the Vice President of the Uong Bi Coal Company's Trade Union, Hong Hue, the Trade Union always accompanies the profession in occupational safety and health work, from selecting and training occupational safety and hygiene workers to creating conditions in terms of time and equipment. The selection of occupational safety and hygiene workers is carried out objectively and democratically in production teams. Trusted workers must be experienced, have solid expertise, have prestige and a high sense of responsibility. They are facilitated by the Trade Union and the profession to be inspected, reminded and propagated at the workplace, especially at the beginning of the production shift when safety risks are likely to occur.

Every month, the company's Union coordinates with the professional team to inspect the safety and hygiene activities of the staff, evaluate their communication skills, forecast risks, and propose preventive solutions. Active and effective safety and hygiene staff are rewarded, while those who have not completed their tasks will be reminded and disciplined promptly.

In parallel, the company focuses on training occupational safety and hygiene staff right on the scene. Training sessions to analyze the causes of accidents and common risks help occupational safety and hygiene staff gain more experience, thereby promptly identifying and eliminating risks.

In 2025, Uong Bi Coal Company won the first prize in the 13th TKV Competition for Excellent Safety and Hygiene Workers. This achievement not only affirms the quality of the strong safety and hygiene worker network, but also demonstrates the solidarity and companionship between the trade union and the profession in occupational safety and hygiene work.

However, to improve the effectiveness of occupational safety and health work, the company recommends that TKV soon issue a unified regulation on occupational safety and health activities applicable to the entire Group; at the same time, have a program of visiting and learning experiences for excellent occupational safety and health workers at well-performing units, creating a ripple effect throughout the industry.

With the motto “Safety for production, production must be safe”, Uong Bi Coal Company is gradually building a safety culture in each worker. The network of safety and hygiene workers is not only the core force in monitoring and reminding, but also the spiritual support, bringing peace to thousands of miners working day and night in deep tunnels.
