A huge breast tumor that plagued me for 3 years.
Recently, doctors at K Hospital successfully removed a massive breast tumor, over 20cm in diameter and weighing more than 3kg, from Ms. Le Thi H. (49 years old, residing in An Duong district, Hai Phong city). Remarkably, the patient was too embarrassed to seek medical attention and endured the tumor for over three years. Only when the tumor showed signs of bleeding, grew excessively large, and her breasts became increasingly swollen and painful did she finally go to K Hospital for examination.

Doctors said that before coming to the hospital for examination and treatment, Ms. H. had self-examined and discovered an abnormal lump in her right breast a long time ago. However, due to her complacency and embarrassment because she was not yet married or had children, she let the tumor grow for more than 3 years. Only when the tumor started bleeding and was about the size of a cabbage did she seek medical attention.
At the hospital, doctors diagnosed a large fibroadenoma in the right breast, approximately over 20cm in diameter. Dr. Pham Hong Khoa, Head of the Outpatient Department at Quan Su Clinic, stated: "The tumor had been present for a long time, growing excessively large over an extended period, leading to rapid progression, inflammation, ulceration, infection, bleeding, and fluid discharge. After a consultation, we decided to completely remove the right breast to prevent the infection from spreading. Without early surgery, the tumor could rupture, causing severe ulceration and threatening the patient's health and psychological well-being. Therefore, the patient was advised to be admitted to the hospital early for treatment."
Freed from a massive breast tumor
Dr. Khoa stated: "The patient was admitted in stable general health, with asymmetrical breasts due to a large tumor causing a difference in size between the left and right breasts. The right breast had a firm mass. There was very little remaining breast tissue due to compression by the tumor. The right breast was sagging. The immediate biopsy results showed a grade 1 phyllodes tumor of the breast. This is a rare type of tumor that develops in the connective tissue of the breast and has polymorphic characteristics. Therefore, to determine whether the patient's tumor is benign or malignant, we will conduct further biopsies of other areas of the tumor to determine the next course of treatment."
Currently, Ms. H.'s health is stable after the surgery. She is happy because she no longer feels self-conscious about the significant difference between her two breasts, and especially because her daily life will be easier, and her health will not be affected by the heavy tumor as before.
According to Dr. Khoa, phyllodes tumors of the breast are a special breast disease that can develop very quickly, recur easily, and increase in malignancy. Phyllodes tumors have three grades: benign, borderline, and malignant. Through the case of patient Le Thi H., doctors at K Hospital also advise women to proactively prevent the disease by monitoring their health regularly. At the same time, women should regularly self-examine for any abnormalities that appear on their bodies, and promptly go to the hospital to see a doctor for detection and treatment of breast-related problems.
