Mr. Nguyen Xuan Khang has decided to allocate 6-12 billion VND to support 30 teacher training students, aiming to address the shortage of English teachers in Meo Vac district.
On November 25th, Mr. Nguyen Xuan Khang, Principal of Marie Curie School in Hanoi , signed a commitment to support the training of 30 English teachers for Meo Vac district, Ha Giang province, through a combination of government-sponsored recruitment and social mobilization.
Accordingly, the District People's Committee will recruit students to study English at university, and then re-employ them upon graduation. Marie Curie School will provide scholarships of at least 5 million VND per month to each student for four years, starting in December. The financial support will be transferred directly to the students' accounts. The total estimated cost to support 30 students is approximately 6-12 billion VND.
"The project will create a long-term source of English teachers for Meo Vac district, addressing the root cause of the teacher shortage," Mr. Khang said.

Teacher Khang recounted that the connection between Marie Curie School and Meo Vac district began in 2021, stemming from the national project to plant one billion trees, and the school planted 20,000 cypress trees in Khau Vai commune of the district.
Following this, teachers and students from Marie Curie School provided textbooks, storybooks, and school supplies to several schools in Meo Vac. Mr. Bui Van Thu, then Head of the District Education and Training Department, shared that the entire district had over 2,600 third-grade students but only one primary school English teacher. Meanwhile, from the 2022-2023 school year, the whole country implemented the new general education program, requiring third-grade students to have four English lessons per week.
Touched by Mr. Thu's concerns, Mr. Khang also pondered deeply. He subsequently recruited 22 teachers to teach English online to all third-grade students in Meo Vac. The project began in September 2022 and will continue until the students complete primary school.
However, Mr. Khang thought, "If this batch of students finishes in three years, what else can I do for Meo Vac?"
"I came up with the idea of training local people to become English teachers for the long term. Doing this would solve the root problem of the teacher shortage," Mr. Khang said about his proposed project to "nurture" 30 English students for the district.

Nine students from the University of Science and the University of Foreign Languages (Thai Nguyen University), Hanoi Pedagogical University, University of Natural Resources and Environment, and the National Academy of Public Administration have signed a commitment to receive support from Marie Curie School and will teach English in Meo Vac after graduation.
Teacher Khang said, "If you and your families agree, I would like to adopt you as my children. I will provide you with money for food, accommodation, and tuition. After you finish your studies, you will return to your hometown to teach. I wish you all the best in your studies, and that you live up to the trust and love of your families, teachers, and me."
Chảo Thị Xuân, from Xín Cái commune, Mèo Vạc district, a second-year student in the English Language Department at the University of Science, Thai Nguyen University, was deeply moved by Professor Khang's sharing.
Born into a family with nine siblings, and having lost her father at a young age, Xuân witnessed her mother's hardships and nurtured a dream of becoming a teacher since the sixth grade. At that time, she loved learning English and wanted the children in her hometown to also have the opportunity to learn a foreign language.
"The support and encouragement from Mr. Khang will give me more motivation to study hard and fulfill my dreams," Xuan said.
Mr. Ngo Manh Cuong, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Meo Vac district, expressed his deep gratitude for the support from Marie Curie School and pledged to implement the project in accordance with regulations.
Representatives from the Departments of Education and Training of Ha Giang and Hanoi also highly appreciated this idea, hoping that the project would achieve sustainable effectiveness, spread to many localities, and contribute to solving the teacher shortage.
