Today (May 10) in China, the second day of competition of the 2025 Asian Weightlifting Championship took place, with the focus on the men's 61 kg weight class, where the weightlifter Nguyen Tran Anh Tuan, the current world number 3 in this weight class, participated. This is also the weight class that Vietnamese weightlifter Trinh Van Vinh participated in the 2024 Paris Olympics but did not participate in this Asian tournament.

Mr. Nguyen Huy Hung, in charge of the weightlifting department, Vietnam Sports Administration, said that the 61 kg weight class of this Asian weightlifting championship has competition as fierce as that of the Olympics with the participation of two Chinese host athletes, Wang Hao, Wang Lin, and North Korean athlete Park Myong-jin.
Competitive pressure was part of the reason why the representative of the Vietnamese weightlifting team, Nguyen Tran Anh Tuan, failed in all 3 snatches. The 27-year-old weightlifter registered a starting weight of 127 kg but failed both times. In the last attempt, he lifted 129 kg and was also unsuccessful. Remember, at the 2024 Paris Olympics, weightlifter Trinh Van Vinh also disappointed when he failed in all 3 snatches, also in the 61 kg weight class.

In the Asian Championship, there are 3 sets of medals for the snatch, clean and jerk and total, so Nguyen Tran Anh Tuan continued to compete in the clean and jerk event. He successfully performed the first push with a score of 150 kg but failed in the next 2 pushes with the weights of 160 kg and 161 kg, so he only ranked 4th.
Vietnamese weightlifters won 2 gold medals
Previously on the opening day of competition, the Vietnamese weightlifting team won its first gold medal thanks to Lai Gia Thanh in the snatch event with a score of 120 kg, 1 kg more than Chinese weightlifter Wang Weidong.
In the final of the men's 67 kg weight class that took place on the afternoon of May 10, Tran Minh Tri excellently won 1 gold medal and 2 silver medals for the Vietnamese weightlifting team. Minh Tri finished second in the snatch and clean and jerk but had the highest total lift of 318 kg, so he won the total lift gold medal. This is the second surprising gold medal for Vietnamese weightlifters at this Asian championship.
