The iPhone Air, Apple’s thinnest phone ever, is making waves online. At just 5.6mm thick, it’s thinner than Samsung’s Galaxy S25 Edge, and many are concerned that a razor-thin phone would be prone to bending or breaking during use.
However, a series of community bend tests show otherwise. As soon as the product was released, a series of videos appeared on social networks recording users deliberately testing the durability of the iPhone Air. They placed the phone on the edge of a table to bend it, and even used a hammer to hit it hard. So far, no one has succeeded in completely destroying the device.
This reminds many people of “bendgate”, the controversial incident when the iPhone 6 Plus was launched in 2014. At that time, many users reported that the device easily warped after being kept in their pockets for a while. With the iPhone Air, Apple seems to have no such problem.
One of the most notable tests comes from Chinese YouTuber Mediastorm. Instead of impromptu tests, he took a more scientific approach by placing the iPhone Air and iPhone 6 Plus in a force machine, pressing down on the middle while the two ends are fixed. This method simulates the actual bending stress that the phone might experience.
The measured results show that the iPhone Air can withstand a force of -60.1 kgf, while the iPhone 6 Plus is at -60.2 kgf. Under the same conditions, the iPhone 6 Plus is clearly deformed, while the iPhone Air is almost unaffected. Mediastorm said that users can feel the phone slightly bend when pressing hard, but when released, the phone immediately returns to its original shape.
This test surprised the online community. A product as thin as a pencil but much more durable than expected. That also shows that Apple has put a lot of effort into design, combining materials and manufacturing techniques to create a smartphone that is both thin, light and sturdy.
While it will take some time to test it in everyday use, the iPhone Air is proving that thin doesn't have to mean fragile. The user community may continue to try to destroy the phone, but it seems Apple has created a device that is durable enough to withstand any challenge.
