Three remember and three don't

MSc. Nguyen Tien Dung, Vice Principal of the High School of Educational Sciences (HES), University of Education (Vietnam National University, Hanoi) said that June is a key time for 12th graders to prepare for the high school graduation exam.

“We pay special attention to researching and applying the new exam structure of the 2025 high school graduation exam, according to the instructions of the Ministry of Education and Training , demonstrated through the construction of the test matrix and specification. This helps students quickly get acquainted with the exam format and requirements for new qualities and abilities,” said Mr. Dung.

Based on the results of the survey tests, the school analyzes and arranges students according to their exam orientation and personal abilities. From there, appropriate advice is provided, ensuring that teachers can closely follow and support each student through each review stage.

In particular, based on students' exam registration wishes, the school assigns experienced and highly specialized teachers to directly guide, ensuring the most optimal review results.

Teachers are assigned to closely follow up with parents and students on their review plans (because each student has different exam combinations and wishes). Professional groups actively prepare review content to help students systematize their knowledge and get familiar with the exam structure. More importantly, teachers guide students to proactively review methods, closely follow the curriculum and exam structure in the new format.

Mr. Dung believes that at the present time, teachers need to guide students to grasp basic knowledge. This not only creates confidence but also helps them feel comfortable.

In addition, the school focuses on training test-taking skills as well as psychology in the exam room. Through the test and survey rounds, teachers and students gain experience, systematize knowledge, get familiar with new exam structures and practice test-taking skills and psychology.

Dr. Dang Thi May, Head of the Literature - Social Sciences and Educational Activities Group, HES School advised that in order to do well in the Literature exam in the upcoming 2025 high school graduation exam, students need to have effective review methods, grasp the characteristics of literary genres and text types; know how to apply Vietnamese knowledge, knowledge of historical and social contexts and aesthetic concepts of different periods along with personal experiences to read and understand texts; master the skills of writing paragraphs, social argumentative essays and literary argumentative essays.

According to Ms. May, students need to remember 3 things: Calmly read the questions carefully, accurately determine the requirements of the questions, discover the relationship between the parts (Reading and Writing), the connection between the questions in the questions to form ideas, "strategies" for doing the test. Allocate time reasonably and flexibly when doing the test: Reading section should only take 30-35 minutes; writing a paragraph takes about 25-30 minutes, writing an essay takes about 60 minutes.

Complete all the questions in the test, answer the main points, do not be long-winded, express yourself clearly, ensure the capacity, demonstrate independent thinking and test-taking skills. At the same time, students need 3 no's: Do not be subjective, guess, or memorize; do not worry, lose your temper; do not cheat in exams.

To achieve the best results in the 2025 high school graduation exam, Dr. Dang Thi May, a teacher at HES, said that candidates need to have a firm grasp of the 3 remembers and 3 don'ts.

Maximum supported fields

These days, at Viet Yen High School No. 2 (Bac Giang), some classrooms are still filled with the sounds of teachers giving lectures.

Mr. Le Van Luc, the school principal, shared that the Board of Directors and the teaching staff identified reviewing for 12th graders as an important task during the school year. At the beginning of the second semester, Circular 29 of the Ministry of Education and Training on extra teaching and learning took effect. Although teaching was free, teachers in the school requested to increase review periods for students compared to the regulations. The Ministry stipulated that these periods support weak students, but almost 100% of 12th graders registered to participate in review.

The Department of Education and Training of Bac Giang organized 2 trial exams, the school organized 2 surveys, through which the weaker students were differentiated, and teachers provided additional tutoring. Currently, teachers teach 2 Literature periods, 1 Math period, and 1 Physics period per week. Through the tests and assessments, the weaker students have shown positive changes.

The Chinese language class at Bac Giang High School for the Gifted maintains 3 Literature sessions per week. Vu Thi Linh, the student who achieved the highest Literature score in the class in the second survey by the Department of Education and Training, shared that she hopes to achieve a score of 9+ in this subject in the graduation exam. The review sessions from teachers in class help Linh improve with each exam and test.

Mr. Tran Duy Phuong, Principal of Bac Giang High School for the Gifted, affirmed that the school's 12th grade students are among the best in the province. However, since the beginning of the school year, the school has developed a plan to divide the students into 3 stages of reviewing for the graduation exam.

In phase 2 (semester II), students review 2 periods/subject/week for 2 compulsory subjects and elective subjects. In phase 3 (1 month before the graduation exam), students actively review at home for about 10 days.

From June 9-21, students will focus on reviewing each subject at school 3 times a week, 2 periods per session. The school encourages subject teachers to voluntarily register to teach extra sessions for the classes. From June 22 until the graduation exam, subject teachers will continue to guide and assign homework when students study on their own.

Mr. Phuong said that during the review process, the school divided students into 3 groups: the group striving to be valedictorian, the group graduating with honors, and the group striving to achieve the highest results in the province.

Ms. Nguyen Boi Quynh, Principal of Viet Duc High School, Hoan Kiem (Hanoi) said that at the end of the school year, 12th grade students of the school review for the high school graduation exam at home under the guidance of subject teachers.

Worried that candidates will "forget" the exam time

This year, candidates will take two elective subjects instead of the combined exam as in previous years. Therefore, high school leaders are worried that candidates who only take one of the two elective subjects will “forget” the exam time and lose the opportunity to graduate.

Ms. Cao Thanh Nga, Principal of Phan Huy Chu High School, Dong Da (Hanoi), shared her concerns for candidates taking an elective subject in the upcoming high school graduation exam.

According to Ms. Nga, candidates exempted from the foreign language exam this year only have one subject to choose from. Depending on the arrangement in each exam room, some candidates will take the first exam, some will take the second exam. Candidates taking the first exam can rest assured because the exam will start at the same time as the Literature exam the day before (the morning of June 26). Candidates taking the second exam, according to the regulations, must be present in the exam room at least 10 minutes before the exam papers are distributed to prepare.

“The exam time is too late, which leads to the risk of candidates forgetting and making mistakes. Thus, if they arrive later than the prescribed time, they will not only lose the right to take the exam of their choice, but will also be delayed by 1 year in graduation and university admission,” said Ms. Nga.

Ms. Nga asked subject teachers to constantly remind and pay attention to the school's 12th grade students to minimize confusion and errors.

This year, for the first time following the 2018 general education program, students will take 2 optional tests instead of 1 combined test like the 2006 education program. An exam room has at most 5/9 optional subjects, and at least 2/9 optional subjects. Therefore, the work of printing and arranging exam rooms is inevitably confusing.

At Viet Yen High School No. 2 (Bac Giang), after entering the list of 12th grade students taking the graduation exam into the registration numbering and exam room arrangement software, a situation occurred where the machine arranged 1 candidate/exam room. After the school asked for the opinion of the Ministry of Education and Training, this exam site could organize a combined room or move this candidate to another exam site.

Similarly, in the printing of exam papers, the leaders of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City said that in reality, if there is a shortage of exam papers this year, it will be very difficult to handle. The Ministry of Education and Training needs to consider the number of subjects in each exam room and provide enough exam codes to ensure that each exam paper has enough content to meet the requirements.
