Arriving in Cam Giang town on a late-year day, we were amazed by the new look of a town with a history spanning nearly 400 years. Streets steeped in history, such as Vinh Quang, Doc Lap, and Thach Lam, have now donned a new, modern, and spacious appearance, yet still retain the unique character of a land once known as the "town of literature." Along Highway 196, tall buildings stand side by side.

Born and raised in this land, witnessing the development of his hometown, especially after Kim Giang commune was merged with the former Cam Giang town to form the current Cam Giang town, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Tuan, 42 years old, residing in Zone 2, said that the Doc Lap road passing through his neighborhood used to be narrow, winding, and covered with gravel. In 2022, the road received attention from the local authorities for renovation and expansion. The entire route was upgraded, with sidewalks and a drainage system. "The urban landscape is becoming cleaner, more beautiful, and more spacious, and the people are very happy," Mr. Tuan said.

From 2019 to 2021, Kim Giang commune merged with Cam Giang town to form the new administrative unit, Cam Giang town. Following the merger, over the past three years, the locality has invested over 14 billion VND in constructing, repairing, and upgrading many school buildings, roads, and cultural centers, contributing to improving the material and spiritual lives of the people. In particular, since the merger, Cam Giang town has actively encouraged and attracted investment, including a multi-level school project invested by Hung Phat Joint Stock Company. This project is a multi-level primary, secondary, and high school school aimed at reducing the burden on local schools, especially at the high school level. “The goal of the Party Committee, government, and people of Cam Giang is to build the town into a civilized urban area,” said Pham Thanh Tung, Secretary of the Party Committee of Cam Giang town.

From 2021 to the present, the town has invested nearly 5 billion VND in renovating several streets such as Doc Lap, Vinh Quang, and Chien Thang; reinstalling the lighting system; placing public trash cans in residential areas; and installing street name signs and house numbers in residential areas of the former Kim Giang commune. Along with investing in school infrastructure, transportation, and urban beautification, in early 2023, the town also invested nearly 10 billion VND in building the offices for the Town Party Committee, People's Council, and People's Committee. Notably, after the merger, Cam Giang town has received significant investment from Cam Giang district in many important projects such as upgrading and expanding the town's main road to district road 196; and renovating and expanding road 19 through the area…

Cam Giang also focuses on developing services, trade, and agricultural production to improve the lives of its people. The town has planned a business area for used cars and machinery in Trang Kenh, Kim Quan, and Nguyen Khe areas, and a commercial service area in zones 1, 2, and 3... After 3 years of merger, the average per capita income of Cam Giang town has reached 70 million VND (compared to only 48 million VND/person at the beginning of 2021 after the merger).

New expectations

Following the merger, Cam Giang town received significant investment from Cam Giang district to upgrade and expand many roads.

During the period 2023-2025, Cam Giang town is not subject to mandatory merger due to previous restructuring. However, according to the overall plan and the approved administrative unit restructuring plan for communes in Cam Giang district, Thach Loi commune will merge with Cam Giang town to ensure the district's overall planning objectives are met. Cam Giang will continue to implement restructuring and mergers to build and develop the town into a central urban model (along with Lai Cach town), serving as a spatial development nucleus to form the district's overall urban system.

According to the plan, Thach Loi commune will merge with Cam Giang town, which will be renamed Cam Giang town. After the merger, the future Cam Giang town will cover an area of ​​10.52 km2 with a population of nearly 14,000 people. Thach Loi commune and Cam Giang town are adjacent to each other, located on Highway 388, making transportation convenient. They also share many similarities in customs and lifestyles, so the implementation of the administrative unit reorganization process has been met with consensus from local officials and people.

As a native of Cam Giang town, Mr. Pham Van Thang, now nearly 60 years old, residing in Zone 2, has twice voted in favor of the town's administrative reorganization. "After more than three years of the new administrative unit being operational, witnessing the many changes in our town, we are very excited. We hope this new reorganization will continue to create momentum for Cam Giang's even stronger development," Mr. Thang said.

In 2024, Cam Giang district is expected to invest in the construction of the Luong Dien – Cam Giang bridge, facilitating travel for residents of the two localities as well as neighboring areas. “We hope that the province and Cam Giang district will pay more attention to investing in the localities after the merger, especially the communes under the incentive program, so that Cam Giang town in the future will truly be a central urban area and a nucleus for socio -economic development in the region,” Mr. Pham Thanh Tung expressed.
