Health-protecting gift baskets are selling out fast.

Observations at major supermarket chains in Hanoi show that this year's Tet gift basket market focuses on the affordable segment, with over 90% being Vietnamese products. Prices commonly range from a few hundred thousand dong to over one million dong, catering to diverse gift-giving needs from families, individuals, and businesses.

At GO! supermarket chain, Tet gift baskets are priced from 165,000 VND to 1.4 million VND per basket, with the most popular options ranging from 200,000 to 500,000 VND.

These gift baskets typically combine sweets, tea, nuts, dried fruits, and beverages. According to Ms. Thanh Thao, an employee at the GO! Long Bien supermarket's Tet gift basket counter, since before the 15th day of the 12th lunar month, customers have mainly been companies and businesses buying in large quantities. Gift baskets priced from 400,000 VND to around 1 million VND sold out as soon as they were put on the shelves.

At AEON stores, Tet gift baskets and boxes are offered for sale at prices ranging from 349,000 to nearly 2 million VND per basket, including biscuits or chocolates, candies, milk, peanuts, instant coffee, rose lychee tea, and an alcoholic beverage.

This year, eye-catching items include beautiful transparent plastic gift boxes or paper boxes designed with images of flowers and horses, symbolizing the Year of the Horse. This segment targets customers who want thoughtful, luxurious, yet practical gifts.

Meanwhile, WinMart supermarket chain introduced its "Complete Flavors of Tet - Sharing Love" collection with various price points starting from 299,500 VND per basket. According to Pham Thi Thuy Huong, Director of WinMart Royal City supermarket, the system collaborated with major suppliers to design gift baskets in different price segments. The 529,000–629,000 VND group includes "fortune," "happiness," and "prosperity" boxes with confectionery, coffee, tea, and soft drinks from reputable domestic brands. Higher-priced baskets include "abundant blessings and good fortune" baskets combining imported confectionery, specialty coffee, wine, and nutritious food.

Notably, this year WinMart is promoting its line of healthy Tet gift boxes, focusing on low-sugar products, herbal teas, and nutritious nuts – suitable for gifting to the elderly or families pursuing a healthy lifestyle. In addition, the Gourmet boxes for the premium segment feature imported European confectionery and selected wines.

In addition to pre-designed gift baskets, WinMart also offers customizable gift baskets (Alacart), allowing customers to mix and match products according to their budget and the message they want to convey.

On streets specializing in cakes, jams, and candies, such as Hang Buom, Hang Giay, Tran Xuan Soan, Ba Trieu, and Ngoc Lam, the demand for affordable gift baskets is gradually increasing. According to Ms. Nguyen Thu Huong, the owner of a shop on Ngoc Lam street, this year consumers are being cautious with their spending, so they prioritize inexpensive gift baskets, mainly containing Vietnamese products, for gifting and displaying during Tet.

Strengthening quality control of goods

The increased demand for gift baskets has led to concerns about product quality and origin. Ms. Minh Ha (Viet Hung ward) said that she chooses to buy gift boxes at large supermarkets to ensure food safety and have a worry-free Tet holiday.

In reality, pre-packaged gift baskets also create loopholes for goods of unknown origin to be mixed in. Therefore, large retail systems have focused on quality control. Indicators such as antibiotics in seafood, pesticide residues, microorganisms, borax, etc., are all strictly checked. Tet holiday goods such as cakes, jams, candies, sausages, meat, seafood, vegetables, fruits, and sticky rice cakes (banh chung and banh tet) must go through inspection steps before being put on the shelves.

From a state management perspective, Trinh Quang Duc, Head of the Hanoi City Market Management Department, said that the Department has issued a plan for a peak inspection and control period during the Lunar New Year of 2026. The focus is on detecting and handling prohibited goods, smuggled goods, counterfeit goods, violations of food safety regulations, and commercial fraud.

From now until Tet (Lunar New Year), authorities will focus on essential goods such as food, alcoholic beverages, confectionery, cosmetics, clothing, electronics, and fuel… Particular attention will be paid to controlling the trading and transportation of livestock, poultry, and frozen products.

According to Tran Huu Linh, Director of the Department of Domestic Market Management and Development ( Ministry of Industry and Trade ), demand increases significantly near Tet (Lunar New Year), and the market faces many potential risks. Therefore, the management agency has instructed market management forces to closely monitor their areas, conduct inspections, and combine this with public awareness campaigns and guidance to ensure businesses comply with the law, thereby maintaining order while avoiding disruptions to production and business activities.

With the trend of Tet gifts focusing on health and peace of mind, coupled with strict control measures, the market for Tet gift baskets in 2026 is expected to meet the growing demands of consumers.
