Sam Altman has returned to his position as CEO of OpenAI after a few chaotic days at the company. He is one of many tech leaders obsessed with extending lifespan. He is also said to have prepared for worst-case scenarios such as the spread of a deadly virus, nuclear war, AI attacks, etc., with stockpiles of guns, gold, and survival supplies. Whether eating, working, or resting, he pays particular attention to the daily aspects and maximizes efficiency.

Below is Altman's daily schedule, as revealed by himself.

Morning

Altman drinks a large espresso in the morning right after waking up but rarely eats breakfast. He says he typically fasts for 15 hours a day. When reading emails, he uses a full-spectrum LED light for about 10-15 minutes. He also avoids early morning meetings because that's when he's most productive.

During the day

Altman typically prefers afternoon meetings and finds 15-20 minute or 2-hour meetings to be the most productive. The OpenAI CEO believes the default 1-hour time limit is a waste of time, so he avoids them as much as possible.

Altman doesn't seem to appreciate meetings, sharing, "90% of impromptu meetings are a waste of time, though the remaining 10% actually makes up for it." He prefers using his free time to meet and connect with new people and ideas, and to think about what to do.

He often makes to-do lists and prefers taking notes on paper rather than on a computer. On his blog, the 38-year-old leader said it helps him keep track of what he wants to accomplish in a year, a month, or a day. The lists help him stay focused and multitask because he doesn't have to remember so many things in his head. "If I'm not in the mood to work on something, I always find something else appealing to do."

He also had another espresso after lunch.

Evening

Despite consuming a lot of caffeine, sleep is one of the most important things for Altman to be able to work effectively. He avoids eating too much before bed and doesn't drink alcohol.

Since childhood, he has been a vegetarian, drinking nutritional supplements despite hating them. He also avoids foods that upset his stomach, such as extremely spicy, hard-to-digest, or sugary foods. However, he finds it hard to resist sweets.

Having his blood checked quarterly helps him know which vitamins he should supplement. Sam Altman is also believed to have taken the diabetes medication metformin to slow down aging.

When going to bed, the OpenAI CEO uses a sleep tracker and prefers a cool, dark, quiet room with a comfortable mattress. If it's not cool enough, he'll use a cooling pad and often takes a dose of sleeping pills to sleep more soundly.

Exercise

Altman likes to lift heavy weights three times a week for about an hour, and sometimes does high-intensity workouts. This training helps him stay in top shape, in addition to improving his work productivity.
