Weather 2/8: Heat wave returns to the North, flood warning on Ma River in Thanh Hoa

On August 2, heat waves returned to many places in the North and will occur widely on Sunday. The meteorological agency also warned of flooding on the Ma River in Thanh Hoa.

Weather highlights for the evening and night of August 1, August 2, 2025

The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said that in the evening and night of August 1, the North, Thanh Hoa and Nghe An will have scattered showers and thunderstorms, locally heavy rain with rainfall of 10-30mm, in some places over 60mm.

In particular, in the next 3-6 hours, Dien Bien , Son La, Phu Tho provinces will have rain with common accumulated rainfall in Dien Bien in some places over 20mm; Son La 10-30mm, some places over 50mm; Phu Tho 30-60mm, some places over 100mm. In the coming hours, there is a risk of flash floods on small rivers and streams, landslides on steep slopes in many communes/wards in these provinces. Specifically:

Dien Bien: Muong Luan, Na Son, Phinh Giang, Pu Nhi, Tia Dinh, Xa Dung, Muong Ang, Muong Phang, Na Tau.

Son La : Muong Lan, Pung Banh, Muong Leo, Sop Cop.

Phu Tho: Muong Bi, Muong Hoa, Muong Vang, An Binh, Dai Dong, Lac Luong, Lac Son, Mai Chau, Mai Ha, Muong Dong, Ngoc Son, Nhan Nghia, Tan Hoa ward, Thong Nhat ward, Quyet Thang, Tan Lac, Tan Mai, Thuong Coc, Tien Phong, Toan Thang, Van Son, Yen Phu, Yen Thuy.

The meteorological agency warns that from this afternoon to August 3, a flood will occur in the middle and lower reaches of the Ma River. During this flood, the upstream water level at Muong Lat station is likely to rise to alert level 3; at midstream stations to alert level 1-2, some places above alert level 2; downstream stations to alert level 1 and above alert level 1, of which, at Giang station, it is still below alert level 1.

Risk of flooding in riverside areas along the middle and upper reaches of the Ma River, flash floods on small rivers and streams and landslides on steep slopes in mountainous areas of Thanh Hoa province.

In addition, on August 2-3, Thanh Hoa to Da Nang, the eastern provinces from Quang Ngai to Dak Lak and Khanh Hoa will be hot, some places will be extremely hot, the highest temperature will range from 35-37°C, some places will be over 37°C.

On August 2, the Northeast region will experience hot weather with the highest temperature of 35-36°C, some places will be over 36°C. The Northwest region will experience localized hot weather, with the highest temperature in some places being over 35°C. On August 3, the hot weather will spread to the entire North with the highest temperature commonly being 35-37°C.

The heat wave in the area from Thanh Hoa to Da Nang, the eastern provinces from Quang Ngai to Dak Lak and Khanh Hoa may last for many days to come. The heat wave in the Northern region may last until August 4.

At sea, currently, the low pressure trough has an axis through the Northern Gulf of Tonkin connecting with the low pressure area located at 13:00 at about 21.0 - 22.0 degrees North latitude, 108.0 - 109.0 degrees East longitude. The sea area east of the Northern East Sea has strong southwest winds of level 6, sometimes level 7; the Northern Gulf of Tonkin and the Northern East Sea have scattered showers and thunderstorms.

Forecast in the next 12 hours, the low pressure area will move slowly to the North-Northeast and gradually weaken. The influence of the low pressure trough connecting with the low pressure area, the North of Bac Bo Gulf, the coastal sea of Quang Ninh-Hai Phong in the evening and night of August 1 will have heavy thunderstorms. During thunderstorms, beware of tornadoes and strong gusts of wind level 6-7.

On the night of August 1 and 2, the eastern sea area of the North East Sea will have strong winds of level 6, sometimes level 7 at night, gusting to level 8, rough seas, waves 2-4m high. The central East Sea area and the sea area from Gia Lai to Lam Dong will have strong winds of level 5, sometimes level 6, gusting to level 7-8, rough seas, waves 2-3.5m high.

Northern sea area of North East Sea scattered showers and thunderstorms. During thunderstorms there is a risk of tornadoes and strong gusts of wind.

On the night of August 2 and 3, the eastern sea of the North East Sea has strong southwest winds of level 5, sometimes level 6, gusting to level 7, waves 2-3.5m high, rough seas.
