Goalkeeper Berke Ozer voluntarily left the Turkish team after being removed from the list

Turkish football was in turmoil again after goalkeeper Berke Ozer suddenly left the national team's training camp without permission from the coaching staff, simply because he was not registered to play in the 6-1 win over Bulgaria in the World Cup qualifiers.

Berke Ozer suddenly left the national team's training camp without permission from the coaching staff.

According to an announcement from the Turkish Football Federation (TFF), Ozer - currently on the payroll of Lille Club (France) - voluntarily left the training camp after returning to Istanbul, citing the reason of not being selected for the competition list.

“Berke Ozer left the training center without the permission of the coaching staff. When the team is aiming to qualify for the World Cup, such behavior is unacceptable,” the TFF statement said.

Ozer’s actions immediately became the focus of criticism in his home country. Turkish media said that a player leaving the team in the middle of an important campaign showed a lack of professionalism and could affect the team’s morale.

Ozer, 25, was once considered the most promising young goalkeeper in Turkish football. He attracted attention when he successfully saved three penalties in Lille's match against AS Roma in the Europa League this season. However, the position in the national team's goal is currently held by Altay Bayındır and Uğurcan Çakır, leaving Ozer with no chance to play.

The incident comes just before a crucial match against Georgia on October 14, where Türkiye must win to secure second place in Group E - a play-off spot - behind almost certain group winners Spain.

Ozer’s rash actions could cost him dearly. Experts say the TFF will likely take internal disciplinary action, while head coach Vincenzo Montella could remove the goalkeeper from the team’s long-term plans.

From new hope in goal to the center of trouble, Berke Ozer is turning himself into a "redundant" man in the Turkish national team - at a time when the team needs unity more than ever.
