The General Statistics Office said on July 5 that second-quarter income decreased compared to the first three months of the year due to additional income, supplementary income from overtime at the end of the previous year and Tet bonuses that are usually paid mainly in the first quarter. However, compared to the same period in 2024, this income increased by VND800,000.
The second quarter recorded an average income of 9.3 million VND for male workers and 7 million VND for female workers per month. The average income of urban workers was 9.9 million VND while that of rural workers was 7.2 million VND per month.
In the first 6 months of the year, average labor income reached 8.3 million VND, an increase of 10% over the same period last year.
The working-age labor force and employed people in the second quarter increased compared to the first quarter. Of which, the labor force aged 15 and over was 53.1 million, an increase of nearly 170,000 compared to the first quarter of 2025. The number of employed people was estimated at 52 million, an increase of nearly 139,000 people compared to the previous quarter and more than half a million people compared to the same period in 2024.
By economic sector, the employed labor force in the service sector accounts for the highest proportion, nearly 41%; followed by industry and construction at 33%; and agriculture, forestry and fishery at nearly 26%.
In general, the labor force has an increasing trend, but the market development is not sustainable when people with informal jobs account for a large proportion, 63.5% of the total number of employed workers of working age, equivalent to 33 million people. Informally employed workers are counted as including the group in the family who do not receive wages or salaries, business owners, wage earners who do not have a contract or have a contract but do not pay compulsory social insurance, cooperative members who do not participate in compulsory social insurance and workers in the agricultural household sector.
The rate of trained workers with degrees and certificates increased slightly, reaching 29% and the statistics agency commented that "the quality of the labor force is gradually improving."
The unemployment rate in the second quarter was 2.24%, which was considered "quite stable" compared to the previous quarter and decreased compared to the same period last year. However, the unemployment rate for young people aged 15-24 in this quarter was 8.19%, an increase compared to the previous three months as well as the same period in 2024. The whole country recorded 1.35 million unemployed young people who were not studying or training, accounting for 10% of the total number of young people in the country. In rural areas, the rate was nearly 1.5 times higher than in urban areas, with the rates being 11.4% and 8.2%, respectively.
The General Statistics Office said that household living standards in the first six months of the year improved compared to the same period last year, with nearly 97% of households reporting an increase in income. In the past six months, the Government has provided more than 10,000 tons of rice to people, 6,000 tons of which were for Tet relief and more than 4,000 tons due to the lean season.
Director of the General Statistics Office Nguyen Thi Huong acknowledged that the socio-economic results in the second quarter and the first half of 2025 achieved "very positive" results. The economy is forecast to continue to face many difficulties in the second half of the year. She recommended that all levels of sectors proactively and flexibly manage and control inflation.
