The World Bank's Board of Executive Directors has approved a project to enhance flood protection and transport connectivity in Da Nang city and Gia Lai province.
This $145 million investment will provide more than 1.2 million people with better flood protection, safer evacuation routes, and more stable access to markets and services.
The project focuses on two vulnerable yet economically important areas of Vietnam – a fast-growing coastal hub and a Central Highlands corridor connecting farms and factories to the coast. Reducing frequent road closures and detours will reduce costs for businesses and households and improve logistics efficiency.
“In the face of extreme weather events, Vietnam’s infrastructure urgently needs to be adapted to increase its resilience to flooding and coastal hazards,” said Mariam J. Sherman, World Bank Country Director for Vietnam, Cambodia and Lao PDR. “This project focuses on ensuring community safety, promoting economic connectivity and strengthening provincial capacity to manage infrastructure, thereby creating jobs and promoting long-term, sustainable growth.”
In Da Nang city, the project will dredge river flows and build flood channels to reduce flooding in densely populated districts, while protecting essential services such as schools and hospitals.
In Gia Lai province, the project will raise the elevation and reinforce key roads and bridges to maintain year-round connectivity from the Central Highlands to Quy Nhon Port - an important export gateway for agricultural and industrial goods.
Improved, more reliable connectivity to ports and urban centres will strengthen the conditions for attracting private investment and support job creation in the agriculture, trade and service sectors. These improvements are also expected to open up new opportunities for tourism and local businesses.
