This is the second visit to Thailand by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, after attending the ASEAN Summit in 2019. This conference focuses on promoting regional cooperation among the seven BIMSTEC member countries: India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand.
Chaired by Thailand, the conference aims to create a “Prosperous, Resilient and Open” region by 2030, in line with BIMSTEC’s Bangkok Vision 2030.
The key objectives of the summit include charting the future direction of BIMSTEC and issuing a Summit Declaration. Discussions will revolve around issues such as security cooperation, disaster management, trade and economic development, and energy security.
The BIMSTEC region comprises over 1.7 billion people, with a combined GDP of US$4.7 trillion.
According to the Indian Ministry of External Affairs , BIMSTEC promotes cooperation among member states in seven priority areas, including security (including counter-terrorism and transnational crime); disaster management and energy; trade and economic development; transport connectivity; agriculture and food security; science, technology and innovation; environment and climate change; and people-to-people exchanges.
BIMSTEC serves as a vehicle for regional engagement for an open, peaceful, prosperous and resilient Bay of Bengal.
This visit and summit is a valuable opportunity for India to strengthen its relations with the Southeast Asian region, while promoting regional cooperation through BIMSTEC initiatives.
