British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and US President Joe Biden at the White House.
According to Reuters, the meetings in the Oval Office are expected to discuss a range of international issues. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre stated that the conflict in Ukraine is "of top priority." The discussions may also include providing additional air defense weapons to help Ukraine fend off Russian bombing raids and prepare for a counterattack.
In addition, Mr. Sunak will promote closer economic ties between the US and the UK, arguing that economic cooperation is as important to security as defense alliances. The two sides will also discuss solutions to accelerate the clean energy transition and regulate emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI).
A British government official said Sunak wanted to discuss how to protect supply chains from unfriendly actors and how to ensure China doesn't disrupt the semiconductor and other critical component manufacturing markets. However, Sunak would not be pushing for a UK-US free trade agreement.
According to AP, the British Prime Minister is also trying to persuade President Biden to support British Defence Minister Ben Wallace to retain the position of Secretary-General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), when Jens Stoltenberg's term ends in September.
