Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru visits Vietnam-Japan University

On April 28, 2025, Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru visited Vietnam-Japan University, VNU during his official visit to Vietnam from April 27-29.

VNU President Prof. Le Quan, Chairman of Vietnam Japan University Association; Prof. Furuta Motoo - Rector of Vietnam Japan University welcomed and attended the meeting.

Attending the event, on the Vietnamese side were Deputy Prime Minister Le Thanh Long; Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Kim Son, Permanent Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Minh Vu, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Vietnam to Japan Pham Quang Hieu and representatives of leaders of central ministries and branches.

On the Japanese side, there were Mr. Takebe Tsutomu - Special Advisor to the Japan - Vietnam Friendship Parliamentarians' Union; Mr. Aoki Kazuhiko - Deputy Chief of the Cabinet Office; Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Vietnam Ito Naoki and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

The visit of Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru demonstrates Japan's deep interest in the development of Vietnam-Japan University, VNU, and affirms the commitment of the two countries in promoting educational cooperation, scientific and technological research and developing high-quality human resources, towards a sustainable and prosperous future.

Notably, at the meeting between General Secretary To Lam held on the afternoon of April 27, Chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party, Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru agreed to support the training of high-quality human resources in Japan and at the Vietnam-Japan University - a symbol of cooperation between the two countries.

Established under Decision No. 1186/QD-TTg dated July 21, 2014 of the Prime Minister of Vietnam, based on the joint initiative of the senior leaders of Vietnam and Japan, Vietnam-Japan University pursues the model of a research university and the philosophy of liberal education, aiming to become an excellent training and research institution in advanced science and technology and interdisciplinary social sciences, actively contributing to the sustainable development of Vietnam and enhancing bilateral cooperation between Vietnam and Japan.

The visit of Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru took place in the context that just before that, on April 18, 2025, the Prime Minister of Vietnam signed Decision No. 796/QD-TTg, approving the investment policy of the Vietnam-Japan University Construction Project. The project has strategic significance in developing the University into an international standard university with modern facilities, advanced management systems, contributing to training high-quality human resources to serve the knowledge economy.

Speaking at the event, Director Le Quan expressed: “During the formation and development process of VNU, we have always received support and companionship from Japanese partners. Perhaps the clearest proof is that among our current team of teachers and scientists, there are hundreds of people receiving doctoral degrees from prestigious universities in Japan. In particular, at Vietnam-Japan University, there are also hundreds of Japanese teachers accompanying us in training and research activities. We also receive hundreds of Japanese students to study long-term and exchange at VNU every year.”

VNU’s universities and research institutes have a long-standing tradition of cooperation with Japanese universities, research institutes and enterprises in two important areas: Vietnamese/Japanese Language and Culture; Advanced Science and Technology. Director Le Quan emphasized that these cooperations are the foundation for the establishment and development of the Vietnam-Japan University at VNU and are also an important foundation for VNU to develop training and research programs in advanced engineering technology, especially semiconductor industry, digital transformation, green transformation, high-tech agriculture in the era of the Vietnamese nation’s rise.

VNU President Le Quan pledged to promote more strongly the construction of Vietnam-Japan University into a comprehensive connection center of Vietnam-Japan relations. Vietnam-Japan University, VNU trains talents for both countries as well as develops academic relations on the international level such as the East Asia University Forum (BESETOHA) which has had a tradition since 1999.

Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru thanked the warm and respectful welcome from VNU and Vietnam-Japan University. Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru said that Japan and Vietnam agreed to cooperate in training high-quality human resources in the semiconductor chip industry. He was pleased to see the efforts of Vietnam-Japan University in increasing the scale of training as well as developing new and attractive technical training programs, including Semiconductor Chip Engineering Technology.

Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru hopes that the Vietnam-Japan University Project in Hoa Lac will soon be accelerated to create an excellent learning and research environment. At the same time, he also hopes that students and trainees of Vietnam-Japan University will act as a bridge for the development of close friendly cooperation between Japan and Vietnam.

During the exchange with Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru, students and trainees of Vietnam Japan University shared the reasons for choosing to study at the University, the impressive things when studying here as well as some of their future plans.

Currently a student of the Japanese Studies Bachelor Program, Vu Tuan Hung said: “Since I was young, I often watched TV shows about Japan and was interested in the unique culture of Japan. Since then, I wanted to learn more about culture and history, so in grade 12 I decided to take the entrance exam to Vietnam-Japan University - the training institution with the best Japanese Studies major in Vietnam today”. Tuan Hung also shared his desire to study in Japan as well as his desire to contribute to the cooperative relationship between Vietnam and Japan.

“What I enjoy most about Vietnam-Japan University is learning a lot about Japan. Every day, I not only learn Japanese but also learn about Japanese culture, law, economics, and history. During my four years of university, I hope to go to Japan once and experience the Japanese education system. In the future, I want to study for a master's degree in Japan and research Japanese social issues,” said Nguyen Minh Chau, a student of the Japanese Studies Bachelor's Program.

Student Nguyen Quoc Anh said, “For a student who is interested in Japanese culture and wants to study computer science like me, Vietnam Japan University is the most suitable choice. Students of the University have many opportunities to interact with Japanese students and study short-term in this country. Through these opportunities, I can learn a lot about Japanese culture as well as gain a lot of knowledge about computer science.”

Currently, Vietnam-Japan University trains many strong majors at the undergraduate level such as Japanese Studies, Computer Science and Engineering, Construction Engineering, Smart and Sustainable Agriculture, Smart Mechatronics and Japanese-style Manufacturing, Food Technology and Health; and 8 master's training majors including Area Studies, Business Administration, Infrastructure Engineering, Climate Change and Development, Environmental Engineering, Nanotechnology, Public Policy and Global Leadership.

Recently, the University has officially opened three new undergraduate training majors to meet the urgent need for training high-quality human resources: Semiconductor Chip Engineering Technology, Intelligent Control and Automation, Global Innovation and Development; implemented the Master's program in Computer Science and Engineering; and launched two new doctoral training programs: Japanese Studies and Sustainable Science and Technology.
