Promoting mathematical research between Vietnam and the UK

GD&TĐ - On August 27, Deputy Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Van Phuc received Mr. Jens Marklof - President of the London Mathematical Society (UK) during his working trip to Vietnam.

Speaking at the meeting, Mr. Jens Marklof said that on this business trip, the London Mathematical Society will attend the conference "Meeting Vietnamese - British Mathematics" with the participation of many of the world's leading mathematics experts.

The conference is an opportunity for researchers, lecturers, postgraduate students, students... to exchange and discuss current issues related to computer science and mathematics. Mathematicians invited to present reports are prestigious scientists at home and abroad.

The London Mathematical Society, founded in 1865, is one of the oldest and most prestigious mathematical societies in the world. From 2025, the London Mathematical Society has decided to expand its activities globally, and organize joint activities with other countries and mathematical societies around the world.

During the visit to the Ministry of Education and Training , the London Mathematical Society proposed a number of areas for cooperation such as: Organizing math programs and competitions for students; organizing math seminars; and possibly coordinating math training programs.

Especially in the era of artificial intelligence (AI), there is a great need for joint actions in research, training, application and also issues of AI's impact such as social impact, on teaching and learning.

Vietnam and the UK have a lot in common in education, especially in supporting teaching and popularizing mathematics for young people. Therefore, there is a need for common strategies and shared resources.

Mr. Jens Marklof also proposed to strengthen cooperation with the Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics, a unit under the Ministry of Education and Training; so that the Institute can become a trusted address for mathematics and applications in the region, and a bridge between the UK and Southeast Asia.

Welcoming the cooperation proposals from the London Mathematical Society, Deputy Minister Nguyen Van Phuc said that in recent years, the role of Mathematics has been enhanced thanks to the development of new technologies using more powerful and diverse mathematical tools. Mathematics has great opportunities for development.

Vietnam has a mechanism to gather mathematical talents from within the country and the world to develop the best; aiming for Vietnamese Mathematics to be among the leading countries in the world in the near future. Therefore, cooperation with international organizations, including the London Mathematical Society, is very necessary.
