The table tennis movement in Sam Son City has flourished since 2019, when the Long Thanh Table Tennis Club was established with over 20 members who are passionate about the sport in the city. The club operates according to strict regulations and rules. The club's management board often organizes internal tournaments or invites clubs from other localities to compete and exchange ideas, making the movement more vibrant and encouraging players to practice diligently and improve their skills.
On April 22, 2024, the Provincial People's Committee issued a decision to establish the Long Thanh Table Tennis Association (Sam Son City). This brought order to the activities of the clubs, fostered unity, protected the legitimate rights and interests of members, and supported each other effectively, contributing to the socio -economic development of the city. Club members actively participated in organized tournaments, achieving many successes. Through competitions and exchanges, club members had the opportunity to improve their skills, tactics, and competitive mindset, promoting the development of table tennis. Simultaneously, the table tennis training and competition system became increasingly standardized, making the training system for the sport more systematic.
To date, there are 6 major clubs in Sam Son City participating in the Long Thanh - Sam Son Table Tennis Association. In addition, dozens of other clubs have been established based on the principle of bringing together people with the same interests and passion for this sport.
To promote the Long Thanh Table Tennis Association movement, Sam Son City has donated tables and equipment to wards and communes in the area, and especially introduced table tennis to schools.
Mr. Nguyen Vu Long, Chairman of the Long Thanh Table Tennis Association, shared: “If it were simply a place to gather table tennis players, it wouldn't be difficult. The important thing is that we have successfully introduced this sport into schools to contribute to improving the physical fitness of teachers and students, thereby promoting the movement of 'All citizens practicing physical fitness following the example of the great President Ho Chi Minh.' The Association has donated table tennis tables and training and competition equipment to all schools from primary to high school in the area. These schools have established table tennis clubs for teachers and students. We also regularly invite top table tennis players from the province to train and mentor talented students. In addition, the association does a good job of social welfare with programs to donate bicycles, clothes, etc., to students in difficult circumstances in Sam Son City and many other localities in the province.”
Mr. Pham Xuan Truong, Head of the Education and Training Department of Sam Son City, said: "After the Sam Son City People's Committee issued a plan to improve the quality of socialized arts, sports, and culture, the table tennis tournament for students has been organized since 2023 with the support of the Long Thanh Table Tennis Association. This is an opportunity for students to improve their physical health, awaken their passion, discipline, and perseverance in training and studying. To date, the school table tennis movement of the Sam Son Education and Training Department has gradually become more organized and systematic; schools have a large number of teachers and students participating in training."
To keep the movement alive, organizing tournaments plays a crucial role. Annually, the Long Thanh Table Tennis Association, in coordination with the Sam Son City People's Committee, the Center for Culture, Information, Sports and Tourism, and the Department of Education and Training, regularly organizes 3-4 tournaments, including provincial-level tournaments, open tournaments, and tournaments on the anniversaries of March 26th and November 20th within the education sector. In addition, there are approximately 6 tournaments organized by the Table Tennis Association and 6 tournaments by individual clubs. Furthermore, based on changes in the world and domestic table tennis rules, and following the development trends of the movement, table tennis tournaments in Sam Son City have also undergone changes in the organization of competition events. A prime example is the introduction of point-based competition with scoring, aiming to create visually appealing matches with high professional standards and generate excitement among participating athletes.
According to Duong Duc Hung, Director of the Sam Son City Center for Culture, Information, Sports and Tourism: “Currently, nearly 400 people in the city regularly participate in table tennis training. The coordination between various sectors and businesses, as well as major sponsors like Long Thanh, has led to the rapid and vibrant development of the table tennis movement in Sam Son City, making it one of the leading units in the province. This is the basis for the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism often choosing Sam Son as the host for provincial, national, and international tournaments annually. In the future, Sam Son City will continue to pay attention to, invest in, and create the best conditions in terms of facilities and organizing tournaments to create a playing field for clubs and athletes, promote social mobilization, and attract resources to support funding, equipment, and training and competition tools in residential areas and schools, attracting more and more people of all ages to participate in training and competition.” frequent".
