American billionaire Elon Musk announced today, March 11th, that this week his artificial intelligence (AI) startup xAI will release the open-source code for its chatbot, Grok. This is considered a leading competitor to ChatGPT, the chatbot developed by the American company OpenAI.
"This week, @xAI will open-source Grok," Musk wrote in a post on the social media platform X.
The decision comes just days after Musk sued OpenAI for abandoning its original mission to pursue a for-profit model. Musk co-founded OpenAI in 2015, but left three years later, according to Reuters.

In response, OpenAI publicly released emails showing that Musk supported the plan to establish a for-profit organization and wanted to merge it with his electric vehicle manufacturer, Tesla.
The billionaire has also repeatedly warned against large technology companies like Google (USA) using technology for profit.
The decision to release Grok may provide the public with free access to test this source code.
Companies like Meta (USA) and Mistral (France) also have open-source AI models. Additionally, Google has released an AI model called Gemma that external developers can design to their specific needs.
While open-source technology can help accelerate transformation, some experts have warned that open-source AI models could be used by terrorists to create chemical weapons or even develop superintelligence with consciousness beyond human control.
