After jaw reduction injections, the patient's cheeks were filled with dirty fluid and thick pus.

On May 17th, the Central Dermatology Hospital reported a case of adverse reaction following a jawline slimming injection.

The female patient stated that four months ago, she received botulinum toxin injections to slim both sides of her jaw at a spa. After one month, she experienced swelling, pain, warmth, and redness in the jawline area on both sides. The spa then made an incision in the injection site on the left side of her jaw and prescribed antibiotics.

However, after only a week of taking the medication, she experienced swelling and pain in the jaw area, although there was no pus discharge. When she went to a private hospital for examination, she was diagnosed with a left cheek abscess, treated with antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs, and had the lesion in her left cheek re-incised.

The condition did not improve, and the patient continued to experience swelling and pain, so they sought treatment at the National Dermatology Hospital.

Dr. Vu Nguyen Binh, from the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, said that the patient suffered complications after receiving injections in the mandibular angle area on both sides.

"The patient not only had swelling and pain in both corners of the jaw, and unsightly scarring on the left cheek due to multiple incisions, but also had a fluid collection forming multiple cavities and crevices spreading throughout the cheek area," Dr. Binh informed.

The patient had to undergo incision and drainage to control the damage. However, the left cheek was a cavity full of mucus and dirt, with many small crevices and pockets, making it very difficult to clean completely. The right cheek was an abscess with thick, viscous pus.

Following the incision, the patient was treated with antibiotics, irrigation, and daily dressing changes. Currently, the wound is healing well and is free of pus.

According to Dr. Nguyen Quang Minh, MD, MSc, Department of Stem Cell Technology Application, Central Dermatology Hospital, the demand for non-invasive beauty treatments is increasing, favored for their minimal pain and quick results.

Services such as Botox injections, fillers, mesotherapy, laser treatments, HIFU, RF, and chemical peels are becoming increasingly popular.

However, many unlicensed beauty salons and spas, or those lacking qualified professionals, still perform these procedures, leading to numerous complications.

"Many people think it's simply an injection with a few milliliters of solution, but it can cause serious complications such as anaphylactic shock, infection, skin necrosis, and even blindness - which have been documented when procedures like filler and botox injections are performed by unqualified individuals," Dr. Minh warned.

According to this expert, using beauty products of unknown origin and without quality control can cause adverse reactions, allergies, or serious skin damage. Furthermore, untrained practitioners can easily make mistakes in procedures and harm customers.

According to Dr. Minh, from May 22-24, at the 8th National Conference on Aesthetic Dermatology, chaired by the Central Dermatology Hospital, there will be nearly 100 presentations from domestic and international experts on non-invasive beauty technologies, guidance on handling complications, and sharing of clinical cases related to complications in cosmetic skin procedures.

Dr. Nguyen Hong Son, Head of the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, warns people seeking cosmetic procedures not to blindly trust exaggerated advertisements from unreliable establishments.

"In particular, it is necessary to thoroughly investigate whether the facility performing the procedure is licensed, meets the requirements for practice, and whether the practitioner has a professional certificate in this field," Dr. Son emphasized.
