On May 17, the Central Dermatology Hospital reported a case of complications after jaw slimming injection.

The female patient said that 4 months ago, she had a botulinum toxin injection to slim her jaw on both sides at a spa. After a month, the patient experienced swelling, pain, heat, and redness in the jaw corners on both sides and the spa made an incision in the left jaw corner injection area and prescribed antibiotics.

However, after only one week of taking the medicine, she experienced pain and swelling in the jaw angle, although there was no pus discharge. When she went to a private hospital for examination, she was diagnosed with an abscess in her left cheek, treated with antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs and continued to incise the lesion in her left cheek.

The condition did not improve, the patient was still swollen and painful, so he went to the Central Dermatology Hospital for examination.

Doctor Vu Nguyen Binh - Department of Plastic Surgery and Rehabilitation - said that the patient suffered complications after injecting medicine into the jaw angle area on both sides.

"The patient not only had pain and swelling in both jaw corners, and an ugly scar on the left cheek due to multiple incisions, but also had an abscess that formed many cavities and crevices spreading throughout the cheek area," Dr. Binh informed.

The patient had to have an incision to control the damage. However, the left cheek was a cavity full of mucus and dirt, creating many small holes and pockets, which were very difficult to clean completely. The right cheek was an abscess with thick pus.

After the incision, the patient was treated with antibiotics, irrigation and daily dressing changes. Currently, the wound is progressing well and has cleared of pus.

MSc.BSCKII Nguyen Quang Minh - Department of Stem Cell Technology Application, Central Dermatology Hospital - said that the demand for non-invasive beauty is increasing, popular because it is less painful and has quick results.

Services like botox, fillers, mesotherapy, laser, HIFU, RF and peels are becoming popular.

However, many unlicensed beauty salons and spas or those without qualified professionals still perform these procedures, leading to many complications.

"Many people think it's just an injection with a few ml of solution, but it can cause serious complications such as anaphylactic shock, infection, skin necrosis, and even blindness - which have been recorded when procedures such as filler and botox injections are performed by unprofessional people," Dr. Minh warned.

According to this expert, using beauty products of unknown origin and without quality control can cause side effects, allergies or serious skin damage. Untrained people can easily make mistakes in the process and cause harm to customers.

Dr. Minh said that from May 22-24, at the 8th National Conference on Cosmetic Dermatology chaired by the Central Dermatology Hospital, there will be nearly 100 reports from domestic and foreign experts on non-invasive beauty technology, instructions on handling complications, and sharing of clinical cases related to complications in skin aesthetics.

Dr. Nguyen Hong Son - Head of the Department of Plastic Surgery and Rehabilitation - warns people who have beauty needs not to believe too much in the "winged" advertisements from unreliable facilities.

"In particular, it is necessary to carefully research whether the facility is licensed, qualified to practice, and whether the practitioner has a certificate to practice in this field," Dr. Son emphasized.
