Quang Nam province can also be considered one of the cradles of Vietnamese journalism. Throughout various historical periods, people from Quang Nam have embraced journalism early on, fulfilling their inherent passion for debate and argumentation, and furthermore, pursuing the service of humanity, spreading culture, and fighting for ideals and revolution…

Pioneering milestones

Historical journalistic materials are widely available on the internet and in many sources, so finding the names and careers of famous journalists from Quang Nam province is not difficult.

One could recount hundreds of articles related to figures like Huynh Thuc Khang, Phan Khoi, Luong Khac Ninh, Bui The My, Luu Quy Ky, Le Dinh Tham, Phan Boi… who belonged to the generation of journalists from before the August Revolution.

It is noteworthy that in every era, journalists who were natives of or had roots in Quang Nam province made pioneering contributions, paving the way for the liberalization of thought and the flow of public opinion in their time.

For example, we can recall Tiếng Dân, founded by Mr. Huynh, the first Vietnamese-language newspaper in Central Vietnam, which, as assessed by the late General Secretary Truong Chinh, "shouted the voice of the people in the imperial city of Hue ," for 16 years (1927-1943), through 1,766 issues.

HUYNH THUC KHANG: "If we don't have the right to speak, at least we can retain the right not to say what we are forced to say."

"...Because we do not have the freedom to say what should be said, but we do have the freedom not to say what should not be said."
(Tiếng Dân Newspaper, 1927)

"Born into a country, one must take care of its affairs."
"On earth, in heaven, and between are people."
(Title by Tiếng Dân)

Next is Phan Khôi, who was not only a contributing writer to numerous newspapers and magazines in both North and South Vietnam such as Nam Phong, Lục tỉnh tân văn, Đông Pháp thời báo, Thần chung, Trung lập, Công luận, Phụ nữ tân văn, Thực nghiệp dân báo, Phổ thông, Đông Tây, Hữu Thanh… but also the founder of the weekly newspaper Sông Hương (as editor-in-chief and publisher).

Mr. Phan was also famous for his argumentative and reasoning skills, sparking nine notable debates, such as the debate on "The Tale of Kieu"; on feminism and women's rights; on Confucianism; on the merits and demerits of King Gia Long; on national studies and the Vietnamese script; on modern and traditional poetry; on idealism and materialism; on the relationship between politics and literature; on the West and the East…

Phan Khôi and Bùi Thế Mỹ were two of the "four great journalists of Saigon" in the early 20th century. Journalist Bùi Thế Mỹ was once the editor-in-chief of Đông Pháp Thời Báo, but his most outstanding contribution was to Trung Lập, a daily newspaper that at one point published 15,000 copies per day in Saigon.

PHAN KHOI : "Basically, I take the promotion of democracy and science as the guiding principle for my journalistic career."

"Because in scholarship, one must maintain an upright and honest attitude. When someone refutes you, if you still have a point, you should respond; if you have no point, you must acknowledge their argument and clearly state that if you lose, you must accept defeat, and not resort to the habit of glossing over the matter. I also know that academic debates are simply about defending the truth."

According to Phan Khoi, the three standards of journalistic writing are Trustworthiness, Accuracy, and Beauty. Trustworthiness means being truthful and logical; Accuracy means clarity, allowing the reader to understand the article and the journalist; Beauty means the writing must be aesthetically pleasing to deeply touch the reader and spread far and wide.

Speaking of economic journalism, many researchers have hailed Mr. Luong Khac Ninh as the "founder" of the profession. Luong Khac Ninh was the editor-in-chief of Luc Tinh Tan Van, but his most significant role was in Nong Co Min Dam, one of the first four Vietnamese-language newspapers in Southern Vietnam, specializing in discussing business, economics, and trade.

"The land opens up to the South"

It seems that Quang Nam, with its name "open land," has been blessed with the destiny of being a region where journalists have often traveled to and achieved success in the South.

Not only during the time of figures like Luong Khac Ninh, Phan Khoi, and Bui The My, but also in the latter half of the 20th century, that land gathered many journalists from Quang Nam who left their mark during the transitional period between war and peace, and between reform and modernization of journalism. These included prominent names such as Vu Hanh, Vo Nhu Lanh, Vu Duc Sao Bien, Huynh Ba Thanh, Huynh Son Phuoc, Nguyen Van Bon, Vu Gia, and Le Minh Quoc…

Perhaps because they want to go to vibrant centers to freely pursue their profession, the majority of people from Quang Nam who work in journalism often choose large cities, especially those liberal places that attract many talented individuals. However, there are still quite a few people in their homeland who continue the journalistic profession.

The generation that emerged from the war contributed to laying the foundation for journalism in Quang Nam province after the reunification of the country, including writers such as Nguyen Dinh An, Ho Hai Hoc, Ho Duy Le, Le Hoang Linh, Dinh Van Manh, and many others who followed in their footsteps.

Present here are the main local media outlets such as Quang Nam Newspaper, Da Nang Newspaper, QRT, DRT, and also the permanent offices of many newspapers and media outlets nationwide. The number of journalists from Quang Nam province in their hometown has also reached approximately 200.

"

Since the birth and development of journalism in our country, in every period, people from Quang Nam have been the main force in the national press. This has formed a tradition, shaping a continuous flow through many historical periods, becoming a source of pride for the people of Quang Nam. Because people born here, due to the rich cultural heritage of the land, rivers, mountains, and fields, integrated from the cultured villages, have developed qualities of critical thinking, honesty, straightforwardness, a willingness to question issues, a keenness for new ideas, and a desire to share knowledge with the community, thus fitting the mindset and cultural character of those working in media and journalism.

"From the story of a Quang Nam native becoming a journalist" - researcher Pham Phu Phong

Following the footsteps of time over the 27 years since the re-establishment of the province, Quang Nam's press has achieved many accomplishments, marking a development in content and form, moving towards professionalism, modernity, and humanism.

Many works have been honored through national and regional awards. In particular, the Huynh Thuc Khang Journalism Award, with its 18-year history, has attracted thousands of entries and awarded hundreds of outstanding works about the land and people of Quang Nam, with increasing participation from journalists across the country.

Still passing on a rich cultural heritage of Quang Nam province…

The compelling urge to be a journalist still resonates in the face of so many life stories…
