During wartime, veterans fought and sacrificed their lives for the independence and freedom of the Fatherland. In peacetime, veteran entrepreneurs have been and continue to be role models, providing motivation and contributing to sustainable poverty reduction in Viet Tri City.
Veteran Tran Chinh Bien boldly invested in machinery to open an embroidery workshop, creating jobs for 20 local workers.
Veteran Tran Chinh Bien (Van Co area, Minh Phuong ward, Viet Tri city) is a prime example of a veteran excelling in economic activities in the locality. Starting a business at a young age without children, the decision was not easy for him. He said: “Before that, my family only did purely agriculture, so our finances were not very comfortable. Through researching various information channels and with the encouragement and support of my wife, children, and family, in 2014, I decided to borrow capital to invest in machinery and open an embroidery workshop.”
Unlike regular garments, embroidery is a more profitable business, but it requires difficult techniques and meticulous craftsmanship. In the early days of his business, Mr. Bien spent his days at the embroidery workshop, sometimes working for over ten hours a day, regardless of the weather. Initially, lacking experience, it was common for many embroidered batches to be reworked or discarded due to errors or failure to meet requirements.
After 10 years of operation, the business owned by war veteran Tran Chinh Bien has established itself in the market with a 200m² workshop, specializing in supplying embroidery products for garments to markets in Taiwan (China), China, etc. Annual revenue is estimated at 2 billion VND, providing stable employment for 20 local workers.
Mr. Nguyen Chi Thanh, Chairman of the Veterans Association of Minh Phuong Ward, Viet Tri City, said: "Thanks to the efforts and dynamism of the members, as well as the support and attention of the association's organizations, 85% of the veterans in Minh Phuong Ward are considered well-off or wealthy, with no poor or near-poor households." Undeniably, veterans are good role models for the younger generation to emulate, both in terms of morality and the resilience to overcome circumstances and age, keeping pace with the times.
The garment factory of veteran Pham Anh Tuan (wearing a white shirt) in Tho Son ward, Viet Tri city, achieves an annual revenue of over one billion VND.
"Veterans helping each other reduce poverty, excel in business, improve living standards, and protect the legitimate interests of veterans" is a movement strongly promoted by the Viet Tri City Veterans Association. In the period 2019-2024, the Veterans Business Club had 22 multi-sector businesses such as construction, building materials production, electrical goods, transportation, etc., with estimated annual revenue exceeding 300 billion VND. To date, 45% of the association's members are considered well-off or wealthy; 55% are in the middle income bracket, and there are no longer any poor households.
Implementing the Government 's preferential credit policy, the Veterans Association of Viet Tri City, in coordination with the Social Policy Bank branch in the province, has entrusted 17 out of 22 wards and communes with managing over 50 billion VND for 53 loan groups and households. Member families have been able to borrow money for profitable businesses, leading to improved living standards.
Colonel Nguyen Huu Thuc, Chairman of the Veterans Association of Viet Tri City, stated: “Throughout the association's activities, we have always promoted the exemplary role of veterans in conjunction with patriotic emulation movements. This includes encouraging veterans to overcome adversity and age to become wealthy and successful entrepreneurs, not only providing support for their families but also contributing to social welfare and economic development in their hometowns.”
Upholding and preserving the traditional values of Uncle Ho's soldiers, veterans in peacetime will always be shining examples for their children and grandchildren, and for the people in their communities to follow and learn from. They are one of the core forces, providing further impetus to the sustainable poverty reduction movement and preventing re-poverty not only in Viet Tri City but also in many other localities in the province.
