This is the first visit by a South African president to Vietnam in nearly 20 years.

Vietnam and South Africa established diplomatic relations on December 22, 1993.

South Africa is Vietnam's largest trading partner and export market in Africa, with bilateral trade reaching nearly US$1.8 billion in 2024.

As of July 2025, South Africa had 20 active investment projects in Vietnam, with a total investment capital of US$0.88 million, ranking 109th out of 151 countries and territories investing in Vietnam.

Vietnam has 4 investment projects in South Africa with a total capital of 8.86 million USD, ranking 45th out of 84 countries and territories where Vietnam invests abroad.

The two sides regularly coordinate and support each other well in multilateral forums.
