This is the first visit by a South African president to Vietnam in nearly 20 years.

Vietnam and South Africa established diplomatic relations on December 22, 1993.

South Africa is Vietnam's largest trade partner and export market in Africa, with bilateral turnover reaching nearly 1.8 billion USD in 2024.

As of July 2025, South Africa has 20 valid investment projects in Vietnam, with an investment capital of 0.88 million USD, ranking 109/151 countries and territories investing in Vietnam.

Vietnam has 4 investment projects in South Africa with a total capital of 8.86 million USD, ranking 45th out of 84 countries and territories where Vietnam invests abroad.

The two sides regularly coordinate and support each other well at multilateral forums.
