Hanoi is entering its first widespread heatwave of the season, with temperatures consistently remaining high, leading to a sharp increase in electricity demand at households, offices, businesses, and production facilities. According to the Hanoi Electricity Corporation (EVNHANOI), electricity consumption in the capital city has been continuously reaching new highs since the beginning of the year.
Specifically, on May 24th, the city's total electricity consumption reached approximately 109.9 million kWh, the highest level since the beginning of the year. Prior to that, Hanoi's electricity consumption had also increased continuously day by day, from 94.4 million kWh on May 20th to 97.4 million kWh on May 21st; reaching over 101.9 million kWh on May 22nd and approximately 106.1 million kWh on May 23rd. This trend clearly reflects the impact of the prolonged hot weather on the demand for electricity for both domestic and industrial use in the area.
According to energy experts, with rising outdoor temperatures, the demand for cooling devices such as air conditioners, electric fans, and refrigerators increases sharply, especially during peak hours at noon and in the evening. This is the main reason for the rapid increase in the electricity system's load in a short period of time.
A representative from EVNHANOI stated that in recent days, temperatures in Hanoi have generally fluctuated between 37-39 degrees Celsius, with the perceived outdoor temperature sometimes exceeding 40 degrees Celsius. This has led to a sudden surge in electricity consumption in residential areas, especially in apartment buildings, densely populated urban areas, and commercial establishments.
Not only residential areas, but many businesses and production facilities are also increasing their electricity consumption to support production activities, goods preservation, and cooling system operation. This creates significant pressure on the power supply system as the entire northern region enters its peak summer load period.
To ensure a stable and safe electricity supply for the capital city, EVNHANOI stated that it has proactively implemented numerous technical and operational solutions. The unit has intensified monitoring of load fluctuations, deployed personnel on standby 24/7, and reviewed the power grid system, transformers, and areas at risk of overload to promptly address any emerging issues.
In addition, Hanoi's electricity sector is promoting the application of technology in management and operation, strengthening remote inspection of the power system to reduce processing time and improve the reliability of electricity supply. Operation and management teams are also required to prepare sufficient spare parts and equipment to be ready to respond to unusual situations caused by extreme weather.
According to EVNHANOI, although the current power system basically meets the needs of people and businesses, in the context of potentially prolonged hot weather, using electricity economically and efficiently is an important solution to reduce pressure on the national power system.
The electricity sector advises people to use air conditioners at a reasonable temperature of 26-27 degrees Celsius in combination with fans to save energy; limit the simultaneous use of multiple high-power appliances during peak hours from 12 PM to 3 PM and from 10 PM to midnight. At the same time, people should turn off unnecessary electrical appliances and utilize natural light and ventilation to reduce electricity consumption.
Experts also believe that saving electricity not only helps reduce living costs for households but also contributes to ensuring energy security during the peak summer season. Given the continued growth in electricity demand along with urbanization and economic development, raising awareness of efficient energy use will play an increasingly important role.
Forecasts indicate that in the coming days, the Northern region, including Hanoi, will continue to experience widespread heatwaves. Therefore, electricity demand is expected to remain high. The Hanoi power sector is closely monitoring weather developments and electricity demand to proactively implement operational plans, ensuring a safe and continuous electricity supply to serve the daily lives and production and business activities in the area.
