The International Scientific Conference on Traditional Medicine organized by the Vietnam Academy of Traditional Medicine ( Ministry of Health ) today, May 18, in Hanoi, published specialized papers on traditional medicine in cancer treatment; treatment of diseases caused by metabolic disorders; rehabilitation, treatment of depression...
According to studies reported at the conference, many traditional medicines have been recorded to help support cancer treatment. Among them, scientists have found lung cancer inhibitors in the xạ can plant.
Propose more studies on the ability of active ingredients in the plant xạ can to inhibit lung cancer

The two major compounds isolated from the rhizome of Cyperus rotundus include quercetin 3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside and luteolin.
Among them, luteolin showed the strongest cytotoxic activity on lung cancer cell lines. The 90-degree ethanol extract from the rhizome of Xanthium barbata also showed positive results in inhibiting lung cancer.
These results demonstrate the potential of Xanthium in the development of products to support the treatment of lung cancer. Luteolin is a potent biologically active substance that has been widely studied for its anti-cancer effects. Compounds in Xanthium may have a synergistic effect in inhibiting the growth of lung cancer cells.
The results of the study also showed that the extract from the rhizome of the plant and the compound luteolin had significant cytotoxic activity on the A549 lung cancer cell line. Compared with other studies, luteolin continued to demonstrate anticancer potential through apoptosis and cell growth inhibition.
"However, further studies are still needed to determine the mechanism of action and effectiveness in animal models before applying it in the treatment of lung cancer," the research team stated.
The report at the scientific conference also stated the mechanism of action and role of traditional medicine in cancer treatment in 4 aspects: fighting cancer stem cells; affecting the tumor microenvironment; preventing cancer metastasis; regulating immunity, improving physical condition and combining palliative treatment for cancer patients after surgery and chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
Traditional medicine works through multiple mechanisms, complementing and replacing modern medical methods in the treatment, palliative care, and prevention of cancer recurrence.
According to Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Vu Khanh, former Director of the Department of Medicine and Pharmacy Management (Ministry of Health ), Vietnam has rich and diverse medicinal resources. Ethnic communities have a lot of experience in cultivating and using medicinal plants and animals. By 2016, Vietnam had discovered more than 5,000 species of plants used as medicine.
