Chinese researchers analyzed the DNA of 127 people who lived in Yunnan Province between 1,400 and 7,150 years ago. Among them, a 7,100-year-old skeleton unearthed at the Xingyin archaeological site revealed traces of a new “ghost human species.” Photo: Yunnan Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology. The 7,100-year-old skeleton belonged to a woman, named Xingyi_EN by experts. DNA analysis showed that her ancestors were not similar to those of East and South Asians, but closer to a “deeply divergent” group of Asians whose genes contributed to the “ghost population” on the Tibetan Plateau, China. The southwest border also includes part of the Tibetan Plateau, which is located northwest of Yunnan Province. Therefore, the mysterious “ghost people” may have been widely distributed across part of the plateau and deep inside Yunnan Province in ancient times. The term “ghost population” that the team uses refers to human lineages whose remains have never been found, but which are inferred through statistical analysis, like Ms. Xingyi’s mysterious ancestors_EN. Ms. Xingyi_EN's ancestor did not belong to the two known extinct human species, Neanderthal and Denisovan, nor to any other known human species. Photo: chinatourguide. In-depth analysis by scientists shows that Ms. Xingyi_EN's ancestors diverged from the human evolutionary tree at least 40,000 years ago, tentatively called the Basal Asian Xingyi lineage. For thousands of years, the basic Asian Xingyi lineage was isolated from other groups, meaning there was no blood mixing, until it encountered Ms. Xingyi's East Asian ancestors_EN.
