(MPI) - According to the report of the General Statistics Office, Ministry of Planning and Investment , in the country, the labor force and the number of employed people in the fourth quarter of 2024 increased compared to the previous quarter and increased compared to the same period last year. Informal workers account for more than 3/5 of the total number of employed workers nationwide. The average monthly income of workers increased compared to the previous quarter and increased compared to the same period last year. The unemployment and underemployment rate among working-age people decreased compared to the previous quarter and decreased compared to the same period last year.

The labor force aged 15 and over in the fourth quarter of 2024 was 53.2 million, an increase of 390.1 thousand people compared to the previous quarter and an increase of 625.3 thousand people compared to the same period last year. Compared to the previous quarter, the labor force in urban areas increased by 146.1 thousand people and in rural areas increased by 243.9 thousand people.
In 2024, the labor force aged 15 and over will reach 53.0 million people, an increase of about 575,400 people compared to 2023. The labor force in urban areas will reach nearly 20.4 million people, accounting for 38.5% of the country's labor force; the female labor force will reach nearly 24.7 million people, accounting for 46.6%.
The labor force participation rate in the fourth quarter of 2024 was 69.0%, up 0.3 percentage points from the previous quarter. The labor force participation rate for women was 63.1% and that for men was 75.2%. The labor force participation rate in urban areas was 66.8%, 3.6 percentage points lower than that in rural areas (70.4%).
The overall labor force participation rate for the whole year 2024 is 68.9%, equivalent to 2023. The labor force participation rate for men is 75.0%, for women is 63.0%, while in urban areas, the labor force participation rate is 66.5%, 4.0 percentage points lower than in rural areas (70.5%).
The rate of trained workers with degrees and certificates in the fourth quarter of 2024 was 28.6%, up 0.1 percentage points compared to the previous quarter and up 1.0 percentage points compared to the same period last year. This shows that the quality of the labor force is increasingly improving.
In 2024, the trained workforce with degrees and certificates is estimated to reach 28.3%, an increase of 1.1 percentage points over the previous year. The number of employed workers in the fourth quarter of 2024 continued to increase compared to the previous quarter and the same period last year. The number of employed workers in the service sector and the industrial and construction sector increased while the number of employed workers in the agricultural, forestry and fishery sector decreased.
The number of employed workers in the fourth quarter of 2024 reached 52.1 million, an increase of 414.9 thousand people, equivalent to an increase of 0.8% over the previous quarter and an increase of 639.1 thousand people, equivalent to an increase of 1.24% over the same period last year. Of which, the number of employed workers in urban areas was 20.1 million people (accounting for 38.7%), an increase of 126.3 thousand people over the previous quarter and an increase of 995.5 thousand people over the same period last year; the number of employed workers in rural areas was 32.0 million people, an increase of 288.5 thousand people over the previous quarter and a decrease of 356.4 thousand people over the same period last year.
In 2024, the total number of employed workers will reach 51.9 million, an increase of 585.1 thousand people (equivalent to an increase of 1.14%) compared to 2023. The number of employed workers in urban areas, both male and female, will increase while that in rural areas will decrease. The number of employed workers in urban areas will be 19.9 million people, an increase of 4.4% (equivalent to an increase of 831.2 thousand people); in rural areas, it will be 32 million people, a decrease of 0.8% (equivalent to a decrease of 246.1 thousand people); male workers will reach 27.7 million people, an increase of 1.5% (equivalent to an increase of 398.8 thousand people); female workers will reach 24.2 million people, an increase of 0.8% (equivalent to an increase of 186.3 thousand people).
The unemployment rate among working-age people in the fourth quarter of 2024 decreased compared to the previous quarter and the same period last year. The demand for labor recruitment of enterprises increased in the last months of the year due to many major events and holidays. The socio -economic situation of our country in the fourth quarter of 2024 maintained a positive trend, achieving many important results. As a result, the unemployment rate among workers decreased compared to the previous quarter and the same period last year. Specifically, the number of unemployed people of working age in the fourth quarter of 2024 was about 764.6 thousand people, a decrease of 98.8 thousand people compared to the previous quarter and a decrease of 142.0 thousand people compared to the same period last year. The unemployment rate among working-age people this quarter was 1.65%, down 0.22 percentage points from the previous quarter and down 0.32 percentage points from the same period last year, of which the unemployment rate in urban areas was 1.27%, lower than that in rural areas (1.91%).
In general, in 2024, unemployment tends to decrease, the number of unemployed people in the working age group is 846.8 thousand people, a decrease of 74.4 thousand people compared to the previous year. The unemployment rate of working age people in 2024 is 1.84%, a decrease of 0.18 percentage points compared to the previous year. The unemployment rate in urban areas is lower than that in rural areas (1.28% and 2.20%, respectively).
The unemployment rate among working-age people in the fourth quarter of 2024 was lower than the previous quarter and the same period last year. The number of unemployed people in the working-age group in the fourth quarter of 2024 was about 1.05 million, down 5.7 thousand people compared to the previous quarter and down 14.0 thousand people compared to the same period last year. The unemployment rate among working-age people in the fourth quarter of 2024 was 2.22%, down 0.01 percentage point compared to the previous quarter and down 0.04 percentage point compared to the same period last year. The unemployment rate among working-age people in urban areas continued to remain below 3%10. The number of enterprises entering the market continued to be higher than the number of enterprises withdrawing from the market, and the import-export and tourism situation continued to improve, contributing to the reduction of the national unemployment rate in this quarter.
In 2024, the country will have about 1.06 million unemployed people of working age, a decrease of 9.0 thousand people compared to the previous year. The unemployment rate of working age people in 2024 is 2.24%, a decrease of 0.04 percentage points compared to the previous year. Thus, the unemployment situation this year in Vietnam has improved compared to the previous year, but still fluctuates around 2.2% as in the period before the Covid-19 pandemic.
In the fourth quarter of 2024, the number of workers engaged in self-production and self-consumption was nearly 3.7 million, down 204.9 thousand compared to the previous quarter and up 206.7 thousand compared to the same period last year, of which 87.0% were in rural areas. Nearly two-thirds of the self-production and self-consumption workers in the fourth quarter of 2024 were women (accounting for 64.4%). Of the total 3.7 million self-production and self-consumption workers, nearly 2.2 million were aged 55 and over (accounting for 59.2%).
In 2024, the total number of workers doing self-production and self-consumption work nationwide will be about 3.8 million, an increase of 78.6 thousand people compared to the previous year, of which 87.7% are rural workers and the number of male workers is about 36.2%./.
