Humanity amidst the harsh exam environment

The fact that many wards and communes in Ho Chi Minh City and some other provinces and cities are urging people to stop singing karaoke and maintain a quiet environment for students to prepare for the 10th grade entrance exam and the 2026 high school graduation exam is proof that the whole society is joining hands with candidates during these major exams.

In recent years, leading up to the 10th grade entrance exam, we have witnessed the entire society getting involved and showing concern for the students from all aspects. The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Food Safety and the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training have directed and tightened measures to ensure food safety during the exam season. The electricity sector ensures electrical safety throughout the exam days. The police force ensures the security of exam papers, and traffic police assist in traffic management, ensuring that candidates arrive at school conveniently and safely...

For many years, the "Supporting Students During Exam Season" program, organized by the Central Youth Union, the Ministry of Education and Training, Thanh Nien Newspaper, and numerous businesses, has consistently supported and accompanied exam candidates with food, drinks, study materials, and words of encouragement.

Each event contributes to a larger picture that reflects both human compassion and societal concern for the future of children, while also demonstrating the immense pressure during the 10th grade entrance exam, especially in large cities and provinces.

Statistics from the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training show that 151,254 students registered their preferences for 10th grade in public high schools; the rate of students being streamed into public high schools after lower secondary school in Ho Chi Minh City this year is 79.4%. Therefore, approximately 31,000 students will not be admitted to public schools after the exam.

Everyone wants their children to secure a place in a public high school after nine years of schooling. However, the competition for admission to public high schools in major cities and provinces is always intense, creating prolonged exam pressure for thousands of students and their families. Even parents whose children won't be taking the high school entrance exam until next year are already feeling anxious.

The collective effort of society to support students before an important exam like the 10th grade entrance exam is necessary and commendable, but it will be more sustainable if fundamental solutions are implemented to reduce exam pressure. This would allow each student to be given favorable conditions to pursue their goals and continue their learning journey in the new phase.

There are many factors contributing to reducing pressure on the 10th grade entrance exam, the most important of which is the goal of achieving universal secondary education. Resolution No. 71 of the Politburo on breakthroughs in education and training sets the goal of Vietnam achieving universal secondary education and equivalent levels nationwide by 2035. To achieve this goal, it is necessary to gradually reduce the pressure of 10th grade admissions by expanding the selection process. Furthermore, it is essential to diversify learning models; instead of focusing solely on public high schools, students can pursue equivalent options that suit their abilities and career aspirations. In addition, the gap in teaching quality between public high schools must be narrowed. Moreover, it is necessary to strengthen the construction of new classrooms and expand the school network to ensure sufficient places for students after completing lower secondary education.

Reducing exam pressure among teenagers does not mean compromising quality or diminishing motivation, but rather acting as a catalyst to shift the entire system from a "teaching for exams" mindset to a "teaching for human development" mindset. This is also the ultimate goal of a humanistic and sustainable education system.
