The Premier League round 28 make-up match between Brighton and Man United took place early in the morning of May 5th, full of drama. The away team Man United needed 3 points to reclaim the third position on the rankings from Newcastle. Meanwhile, the home team Brighton still hasn't given up thinking about winning a ticket to the European Cup next season because they are ranked exactly two places behind Man United.
Kaoru Mitoma is a threat from the right flank for Man United
It is not an exaggeration to call Brighton the "nemesis" of Man United. The team nicknamed "The Seagulls" this season won right at Old Trafford in the first leg last August. After that, Brighton almost took the FA Cup final spot from the Red Devils if they had a little more luck in the penalty shootout two weeks ago.
Antony scored in the 2nd minute and caused trouble for Brighton's defense
Facing the AMEX team, Man United should have scored early in the second minute when Antony hastily shot the ball wide of the post despite the goal being wide open. Two minutes later, a mistake by centre-back Victor Lindelof saw goalkeeper De Gea take the ball straight to the face when he came out to prevent Kaoru Mitoma from scoring.
Goalkeeper De Gea received the ball in his face and tried to stay in the game until the last minute.
Brighton and Man United "tit for tat" in the following minutes but unfortunately the strikers of both sides could not score against each other. The home team controlled the ball better in the second half while Man United was just waiting to play defensive counter-attack. The referee had to issue 6 yellow cards and 4 warnings to the home players, which did not fully reflect the intensity and tension of the match.
Luke Shaw used his hand to play the ball in the penalty area
Brighton kept up the pressure on Man United's goal late in the game and were rewarded. In the 90+9 minute of stoppage time, Luke Shaw fumbled the ball in the penalty area and after checking VAR, the referee awarded Brighton a penalty.
From the 11m mark, Mac Allister fired a decisive shot, tearing through goalkeeper De Gea's net, bringing a thrilling victory to Brighton.
Mac Allister scored from the penalty spot in the 90+9 minute of injury time
Regretfully losing 0-1, Man United missed the opportunity to surpass Newcastle when they were stuck in fourth place with 63 points after 33 matches, 2 points behind the "Magpies". Coach Erik ten Hag's team is now only 4 points ahead of Liverpool and still has 1 match left to play.
Meanwhile, with this victory, Brighton has shortened the gap with Liverpool to only 4 points and played 2 fewer matches.
