I am a free swimming instructor.

When the workday at the Phuc Trach Commune Police Station (Ha Tinh province) ends, Senior Lieutenant Ngo Dang Duc and his colleagues once again teach free swimming lessons to children in the area.

I am Senior Lieutenant Ngo Dang Duc (born in 1996), an officer of the Public Order Police Team, Phuc Trach Commune Police Station.

Every day, my duties include ensuring public order and traffic safety in the area; disseminating and popularizing laws; maintaining social order; and preventing the causes of violations.

Recognizing the reality that the area has many lakes, dams, rivers, and streams, and is prone to flooding, posing a risk of drowning, while many children do not know how to swim, in the summer of 2026, the Phuc Trach Commune Police decided to open free swimming classes with the goal of creating a recreational space for children and training them to swim. And every day, I begin my "new shift" when the sun is less intense.

The swimming pool used for teaching purposes was repurposed from the former Huong Trach Commune People's Committee pool before the administrative unit merger. To provide a safe learning environment for the children, officers and soldiers in the unit collectively contributed funds for renovation, repair, and operation. And each day, I begin another "shift" when the sun's intensity decreases.

The job of this "shift" is to teach swimming and disseminate knowledge about drowning prevention and first aid skills to young children.

I graduated with a major in fire safety command. During my studies, I received comprehensive training in swimming skills, drowning prevention, and rescue operations.

That knowledge not only helped me perform my professional duties well but also served as a foundation for directly training the children to swim.

To ensure that the teaching was technically sound, systematic, and suitable for children, I revisited old materials from my studies and learned from the experiences of other swimming coaches, compiling and rebuilding my own lesson plan for the class.

Currently, the program has attracted nearly 200 children in the area to register for swimming lessons.

To ensure the quality of teaching, we divide the students into two classes, each with approximately 15 students, attending on alternate days of the week.

Many children are hesitant, even scared, when they go into the water for the first time. I don't rush things; I start with the simplest skills like getting used to the water, maintaining balance, and learning to float.

Every movement, from kicking and holding your breath to coordinating your arms and legs, is taught slowly and carefully.

After a few lessons, many children became more confident, felt comfortable in the water, and began to develop their first skills to protect themselves.

The classroom atmosphere is always lively with the children's excitement. To me, that's the most positive sign.

During swimming lessons, we also educate the children about the dangers of drowning, how to handle dangerous situations, and basic first aid skills.

This summer, my team and I are striving to train 100 children to swim safely, helping more children learn to protect themselves from dangers in the water.

As the afternoon sun began to set, the lesson came to an end, and for me, the greatest joy was seeing more and more children become more confident in the water and learn how to protect themselves.
