Canada, Australia win big

According to CNN, on June 22, the research organization Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) announced the ranking of livable city world's best in 2023.

Vienna Capital Austria continues to be honored as the most livable city in the world. This city meets all the criteria of reliable infrastructure, unique culture and entertainment, and "flawless" quality of education and health care.

After years of decline, Australian cities have returned to the top of the rankings, with Melbourne and Sydney taking third and fourth place respectively.

Meanwhile, Canada also won big with 3 cities in the top 10. Vancouver, Calgary and Toronto ranked 5th, 7th and 9th respectively.

The remaining positions in the top 10 belong to the cities of Copenhagen (Denmark - 2nd place), Zurich (Switzerland - 6th place), Geneva (Switzerland - tied for 7th place), Osaka (Japan - tied for 10th place) and Auckland (New Zealand - tied for 10th place).

The capital Hanoi ranked 129th in the rankings, up 20 places compared to 2022, entering the top 5 cities with the strongest increase in rankings in the world.

Overall all indicators increased, except for the stability level.

Ms. Upasana Dutt - head of the most liveable cities ranking department at the EIU - said: "In general, the COVID-19 prevention policy lifted has contributed to raising global livability in 2023".

"The quality of education increases when children return to school. At the same time, hospitals and health systems are less burdened. This improvement is evident in many cities in developing countries in Asia and the Middle East."

However, the stability index decreased slightly, due to "public discontent in many cities due to the cost of living crisis, accompanied by increased crime rates in some places".

This is the only indicator that has fallen among the five key criteria used by the EIU.

"Pressure on public order and economic difficulties have led to increased crime in many cities. This situation is likely to persist for the foreseeable future. Therefore, the stability index in our liveability ranking is unlikely to recover quickly," said Barsali Bhattacharyya, research manager at the EIU.
