Totoro in the palm of your hand

In Vietnam, the name Studio Ghibli is extremely familiar. The Ghibli fan page in Vietnam on Facebook has over 230,000 followers.

The two volumes of the color comic book series My Neighbor Totoro were translated and published by Kim Dong Publishing House.

The studio's animated films attract a large audience, with thousands of articles and videos analyzing (or simply praising) Ghibli's works appearing everywhere.

Founded in 1985, Studio Ghibli is now 40 years old.

Of the three pillars supporting the film studio – Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata, and Toshio Suzuki – director Isao Takahata passed away in 2018, and Hayao Miyazaki is now 84 years old.

But Ghibli films seem to retain their freshness, while continuously evolving with our times.

The commercial value of these works lies not only in the films themselves but also in their derivative products, where the characters are not just icons of the animation industry but become familiar in everyday life.

Among Ghibli's character roster, Totoro from the 1988 animated film My Neighbor Totoro is the most famous.

This character's image is also used as the symbol of Ghibli, similar to Mickey Mouse with Disney. On Ghibli's 40th anniversary, Vietnamese readers welcomed My Neighbor Totoro in comic book format.

The pages of the manga that have emerged from Hayao Miyazaki's films retain their freshness and vibrancy even when we view them in the static state of the illustrations, in the silence of the text.

Even though My Neighbor Totoro is very familiar, the experience of reading instead of watching offers a distinctly different feeling. Reading allows us to stay with each scene longer, observing each expression of the characters.

Allowing the imagination to flourish, when music and sound effects are removed, giving the reader space where a vivid imaginary world can freely soar.

These two color comic books, "My Neighbor Totoro," translated and published by Kim Dong Publishing House, are part of a four-volume set (the remaining two volumes are scheduled for release soon) that includes nearly 90 minutes of animated content.

Another positive point is that the team didn't make the colors of the comic pages too bright, but retained the characteristic shades – something that contributed significantly to the enduring popularity of Japanese animation, lasting until the early 2000s.

The comic book edition of My Neighbor Totoro comes in a cute, small format, allowing readers to hold Totoro's magical world in the palm of their hands.
