According to the annual plan, the entrance exam for 10th grade in Ho Chi Minh City takes place in early June (June 6th and 7th). However, this year, the 2026 high school graduation exam, organized by the Ministry of Education and Training, will be held on June 11th and 12th, two weeks earlier than in previous years. This adjustment to the high school graduation exam schedule will certainly impact the organization of the 10th grade entrance exam, leading to further adjustments related to the exam.
Principals of many junior high schools in Ho Chi Minh City have requested that the City Department of Education and Training promptly announce the date for this year's 10th grade entrance exam so that schools, teachers, parents, and students can proactively plan their revision and teaching schedules and maintain psychological stability.

On the morning of January 20th, in an exchange with Ho Chi Minh City Education regarding the timing of the 2026 10th grade entrance exam, Mr. Nguyen Van Phong, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, stated that the Department is developing a plan for the enrollment of students in the first grades of the 2026-2027 school year. The plan anticipates holding the 2026 10th grade entrance exam after the high school graduation exam, possibly at the end of June 2026, rather than extending into July.
“This year, the high school graduation exam is taking place two weeks earlier than usual, which affects the timing of the 10th grade entrance exam in Ho Chi Minh City. However, if the 10th grade entrance exam is held early at the end of May, students will not have finished the curriculum. Therefore, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training is considering holding it at the end of June – after the graduation exam. At that time, it is possible to simultaneously grade the graduation exam and hold the 10th grade entrance exam,” Mr. Phong informed.
Reportedly, Hanoi also plans to hold an entrance exam for 10th grade in 2026 after the high school graduation exam.
The leaders of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training added that after a meeting of the Department's Board of Directors, they will submit a plan for the exam schedule. The plan for enrollment in the first-grade classes in Ho Chi Minh City for the 2026-2027 school year will be finalized by the Department of Education and Training and submitted to the City People's Committee for approval and promulgation before March 31st.
The 2026 Ho Chi Minh City 10th grade entrance exam will be conducted using a combination of examination and selection methods. Selection based on academic records is expected to apply to students from Thanh An island commune and Con Dao special zone, while the entrance exam will be applied to all other students.
For the entrance exam, there will be three subjects: Literature, Mathematics, and Foreign Language. Students applying for specialized or integrated programs will also take additional exams in their respective subjects. Literature and Mathematics exams will each last 120 minutes; the Foreign Language exam will last 90 minutes; and the specialized or integrated subject exam will last 150 minutes.
This year, Ho Chi Minh City has 171,716 ninth-grade students. The Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City plans to enroll at least 70% of junior high school graduates in public high schools in the city in the 2026-2027 school year through the 2026 entrance exam, equivalent to at least 120,000 students continuing their education in high school.
The 2026 Ho Chi Minh City 10th grade entrance exam will be the city's first entrance exam after its merger with Binh Duong and Ba Ria - Vung Tau provinces and the implementation of a two-tiered local government model.
The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training plans to combine both entrance exams and selection based on academic records in the admissions process. However, the selection-based method will be applied specifically to certain areas such as Thanh An island commune and the Con Dao special zone.
