On the afternoon of July 9, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health held a conference to review activities in the first 6 months of the year and deploy tasks for the last 6 months of 2025.
Mr. Nguyen Phuoc Loc - Deputy Secretary of the City Party Committee, Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City Fatherland Front Committee - attended the conference.
At the conference, Dr. Nguyen Hoai Nam, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health, informed about the health system after the merger of 3 localities.
Accordingly, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health will have 3 headquarters in Ben Thanh ward, Binh Duong ward and Ba Ria ward.
After adjusting the administrative boundaries, the population of Ho Chi Minh City increased from 9.9 million to 13.7 million people. The number of hospitals also increased from 134 to 164. However, the ratio of hospital beds per 10,000 people decreased from 42 to 35, putting great pressure on the current healthcare system.
According to statistics, Ho Chi Minh City currently has 168 medical stations and 296 stations. Of these, 125 medical stations will be upgraded to meet the standards set by the Ministry of Health (over 500 m²), operating as "mini hospitals" with full departments.
Notably, in the coming time, the Department of Health will advise the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee to rename 24 hospitals to match the new administrative unit; at the same time, review and make plans to support professional improvement for medical facilities.
Regarding performance results, Dr. Nguyen Van Vinh Chau, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health, said that in the first 6 months of 2025, the city's health sector recorded 22.45 million outpatient visits (up 10.5%) over the same period in 2024; more than 1 million inpatient cases (up 10%).
80% of health stations in the area have implemented health insurance (HI) medical examination and treatment, with the number of visits increasing by 38%. New models such as family doctors, AI applications for cancer screening, sending young doctors to island communes, etc. are helping to improve the quality of grassroots health care.
Ho Chi Minh City has effectively controlled the epidemic, including ending the measles epidemic, successfully controlling the COVID-19 epidemic and maintaining stability of dengue fever and hand, foot and mouth disease. Since June, all medical facilities have switched to digital platforms to monitor the epidemic for the entire population.
Regarding public health care, Ho Chi Minh City has established more than 1.2 million student health records, examined more than 526,000 elderly people, and piloted school dental care...
The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health is implementing a comprehensive health care project for people at each stage of life, aiming to improve quality of life and sustainable development.
