The Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee has just issued a decision approving the route plan and construction locations for the Ben Thanh - Can Gio Metro project, with a total length of approximately 53.8 km.
According to the decision, the project is being studied based on the revised master plan for Ho Chi Minh City until 2040, with a vision to 2060, which has been approved by the Prime Minister .
The railway line starts at Ben Thanh station, in the 23/9 Park area (Ben Thanh ward), and ends at Can Gio Depot on a plot of land approximately 39 hectares in size in Can Gio commune.
The route passes through the wards of Ben Thanh, Khanh Hoi, Xom Chieu, Tan Thuan, Tan My and the communes of Nha Be, Binh Khanh, An Thoi Dong, and Can Gio.
The chosen route passes through the buffer zone of the Can Gio Biosphere Reserve, avoiding the core zone to minimize the impact on the ecological environment.
The project is expected to include two stations in phase 1, namely Ben Thanh station and Can Gio station. The depot and OCC (Operations Control Center) will be located in Can Gio commune.
The Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee has assigned VinSpeed High-Speed Railway Investment and Development Joint Stock Company to finalize the route plan and project location documents in accordance with regulations; and at the same time, organize a design competition for architectural plans for railway stations, bridges, and related items to ensure technical, aesthetic, historical, and urban cultural requirements.
The Urban Railway Management Board and the Department of Agriculture and Environment have been tasked with coordinating the review of land acquisition feasibility within the project area.
The Department of Planning and Architecture will guide relevant localities in adjusting zoning plans and detailed plans at scales of 1/2000 and 1/500 to facilitate investment implementation.
In addition, the Department of Construction is responsible for conducting a comprehensive study on the expansion of Nguyen Tat Thanh Street and the projects along the route to ensure infrastructure connectivity, investment efficiency, and the progress of the Ben Thanh - Can Gio Metro project.

The Ben Thanh - Can Gio Metro line, with a total investment of over 102,430 billion VND (excluding approximately 13,000 billion VND for land clearance costs paid by the state budget), had its groundbreaking ceremony on December 19, 2025.
The project is invested by VinSpeed (a subsidiary of Vingroup ) under the BOO (build-own-operate) model.
The city is currently carrying out compensation and land clearance work, striving to hand over the project in November 2026. The investor plans to start construction in 2026 and put it into operation in 2028.
Once completed, it will only take people in Ho Chi Minh City about 13 minutes to travel from the city center to Can Gio.
