Minh Dieu Peacock Farm, Phan Huy Chu Street, B'Lao Ward, Bao Loc City, is in the sunny days, the time when male peacocks show off their colorful feathers. Mr. Vu Tien Dat, owner of Minh Dieu Peacock Farm, shared that the peacock farm was formed in 2018, initially mainly out of hobby. Mr. Dat recalled that that year, he participated in exchanges in several groups raising peacocks and pheasants. Seeing that no one in Bao Loc was raising peacocks, he bought a small flock of one male and three females to try to raise a flock.
Starting from four peacocks, Minh Dieu peacock farm now has 300 male and female peacocks. Mr. Vu Tien Dat commented that female peacocks are slow breeders, laying only about 30 eggs a year. He said that for peacocks to reproduce, the timing between male and female peacocks must be coordinated. Because every year, male peacocks have a molting season from April to May. During that time, male peacocks do not mate, and even if female peacocks lay eggs, they will not have embryos and cannot hatch. By October, male peacocks will have fully grown thicker, more beautiful feathers. Female peacocks reproduce from February to June every year, laying only 30 eggs a year. Mr. Dat incubates those eggs artificially, with a hatching rate of about 70%. "Peacocks are very afraid of noise during the breeding season. If there is noise such as the sound of vehicles or machines, peacocks may stop laying eggs and mating. Therefore, the peacock farm needs to be kept quiet during the breeding season," Mr. Tien Dat informed.
Mr. Tien Dat said that peacock eggs take 26 days to hatch, and are larger than duck eggs. After the eggs hatch, the peacocks are raised in cages, with careful care. The baby peacocks are tiny, black, and not very pretty. When they are six months old, care will be easier and the survival rate will be higher. According to Mr. Dat, the peacocks are raised in cages, divided by age for easy care. The big peacocks are raised on the floor, with a layer of dry rice husks on the floor to keep them warm and not hurt their feet. As for the male peacocks, when they are adults, they are raised semi-wild. The female peacocks can reproduce at 24 months old. However, it takes 3 years for the reproduction rate to stabilize. If well cared for, peacocks can live up to 20 years.
The cage for male peacocks is open, with a spacious playground so that the peacocks can fly, jump, sunbathe and spread their tails to show off their beauty. Mr. Dat said: “If male peacocks want to have beautiful colors and good health, they must be raised outdoors. When it is sunny, the peacocks go out to sunbathe, show off their tails and spread their wings. When it is dark or when it rains, the peacocks go inside to sleep. Male peacocks sleep on high wooden poles, similar to their natural behavior in the wild. Peacocks fly very well, so the house must be covered with a tight net.”
Mr. Vu Tien Dat said that the current peacock farm has reached 300-400 birds depending on the time. Each year, the female peacock lays 20 baby peacocks, and the farm can sell 200-300 breeding peacocks every year. The current price of peacocks at 5 months old is 3.5 million VND/pair of male and female, 1 month old is 1.5 million VND/pair. As a young person, Mr. Dat does quite good communication, selling peacock eggs and breeding peacocks online all over the country. He sells peacocks on social networks such as Facebook, TikTok, etc., and also transfers care techniques through online applications on the phone. He shared that peacocks are a fairly easy breed to care for, with a variety of foods such as rice, chicken bran, vegetables, tubers, fruits, etc. Male peacocks are very beautiful, often showing off their tails and dancing, so many farms, many tourist areas, and even families with large gardens want to raise peacocks as ornamental creatures.
Minh Dieu Peacock Farm currently mainly raises two types of peacocks, including the yellow-cheeked peacocks, which are endemic to Vietnam, and the Indian peacocks. The yellow-cheeked peacocks are easy to raise, have a colorful appearance, and are popular in the market. The Indian peacocks are blue, and occasionally mutate to white and have colorful spots, and are also chosen by many peacock lovers. To prepare for raising peacocks, Minh Dieu Peacock Farm has applied for a license to raise wild animals and import peacock breeds from legally licensed farms. Currently, Minh Dieu supplies peacock breeds to a number of farming households in Bao Loc City and neighboring areas. Peacock-raising households can take the initiative in consuming them, or Minh Dieu Farm will accept to buy peacocks for a month from households importing breeds. According to Mr. Dat, the demand for raising peacocks in the community is still quite large, with stable consumption. Currently, the number of peacocks produced by Minh Dieu Farm as well as peacock breeds supplied by satellite farms are sold by Mr. Tien Dat to the market at very good prices. In addition, the peacock feathers of male peacocks that fall during the molting season are also products that many people buy to make handmade decorative materials. The whole body of the peacock can bring income to farmers, it is a very special animal on the B'Lao plateau.
