The first day of competition (August 22) of the World 3 Cushion Survial Billiards Tournament (Seoul, Korea) witnessed an unsuccessful start for Vietnamese players. Tran Quyet Chien, Bao Phuong Vinh and Chiem Hong Thai were unable to secure direct tickets to the quarter-finals. Therefore, the three Vietnamese players had to compete in a play-off this afternoon (August 23) to compete for the four remaining tickets.
The play-off round has 3 groups (taking the top player and the second player with the highest score). Tran Quyet Chien and Chiem Hong Thai are in group A, where Kim Haeng-jik (Korea) and Berkay Karakurt (Türkiye) are present. In the first round, Tony Tran was the first to play, followed by Hong Thai.
Tran Quyet Chien won convincingly in the play-off round
Tran Quyet Chien started the game quite well. In the early stages of the first half, the two Vietnamese players continuously took the lead. After 5 turns, the scores were 49 (Tran Quyet Chien), 37 (Chiem Hong Thai), 17 (Karakurt) and 17 (Kim Haeng-jik). In the second half of the first half, Kim Haeng-jik broke away with a series of points (5 and 7).
Eight shots were taken in the first 45 minutes of play. Tran Quyet Chien held the advantage before the break, with 40 points. Chiem Hong Thai and Kim Haeng-jik both had 36 points, while Karakurt had only 8 points.

Entering the second round, each player was awarded 30 points. The order of play was Karakurt, Chiem Hong Thai, Tran Quyet Chien and Kim Haeng-jik. In the second round of the second round, Kim Haeng-jik officially took the lead with 68 points. Meanwhile, Quyet Chien and Hong Thai both had 64 points, while Karakurt had 44 points.
In the 4th round of the 2nd half, Quyet Chien accelerated with a series of 7 points. After 5 rounds (2nd half), Tony Tran led the race with 94 points. Chiem Hong Thai and Kim Haeng-jik both had 54 points, while Karakurt had 38 points. In the 7th round of the 2nd half, Quyet Chien had another series of 5 points to widen the gap with the chasing group.
In the end, Tran Quyet Chien finished in first place with a total of 101 points. Thereby, Vietnam's number 1 3-cushion carom player won a ticket to the quarter-finals of the World 3 Cushion Survival 2024 billiards tournament (taking place on August 24).
