With its large body, bravery and ability to withstand blows, Mr. Luu Dinh Nam's buffalo number 03 won the Do Son buffalo fighting festival.
From 6am on September 23 (the 9th day of the 8th lunar month), thousands of people flocked to Do Son Stadium to watch 16 buffaloes compete, despite the heat.
According to the Organizing Committee, the stadium has a capacity of 20,000 seats, but only 18,000 tickets were issued to avoid overload. 200 police officers and 200 security guards were mobilized to serve the festival.
The Do Son stadium was packed at 7am. Many people had no seats and had to stand close to the fence. This year, the organizers have designed a roof to protect the audience from the sun and rain.
To attend the festival, audiences must have an invitation ticket issued by the Organizing Committee. 50% of the tickets are sent by Do Son district to the wards to distribute to people's representatives, the remaining 50% are distributed through tourist tours.
The buffaloes were brought to the stadium by the procession, preparing for the match starting at 8 o'clock.
The traditional Do Son buffalo fighting festival takes place from September 15 to 30. In addition to the festival on September 23, there are 13 large and small ceremonies in the wards. The 16 participating buffaloes come from the wards of Van Huong, Bang La, Hai Son, Ngoc Xuyen, Minh Duc and Hop Duc. The buffaloes go through three strict inspection rounds before participating in the final round.
The highlight of this year's festival is buffalo number 03 of Mr. Luu Dinh Nam, Van Huong ward (right corner). The 11-year-old buffalo was imported from Thailand, 1.6 m tall, 2.4 m long, 2.6 m chest circumference, and weighs 1.3 tons. With the largest body in the history of the festival and bravery, buffalo number 03 won consecutively.
The losing buffaloes will be taken to the slaughterhouse and sold for meat right in the stadium grounds for 3 million VND/kg. The further the buffaloes go, the higher the price of meat. The champion buffalo will be sacrificed the next day.

Buffalo owner buffalo 03 cheered when he defeated buffalo 09 and won the championship. The owner of the first prize buffalo was awarded 100 million VND, the second prize was 60 million VND and the two third prizes were 30 million VND.
The victory at the festival is highly valued by the Do Son people. The buffalo owners have invested hundreds of millions of dong and a lot of effort to take care of the "sir" buffaloes.
The beatings and carryings of the buffaloes received cheers from the audience.
