Salmon is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which help maintain and strengthen children's eyesight.

The essential nutrients children need to maintain optimal vision include:

Vitamin A and beta-carotene

Foods like carrots, tomatoes, papaya, and sweet potatoes are rich in vitamin A and beta-carotene. These are crucial nutrients for retinal function, particularly in supporting cells that help with night vision.

Vitamin A helps maintain moisture on the surface of the retina, preventing dry eyes and many eye problems that can cause permanent blindness. If the cornea is too dry, it is more susceptible to damage, inflammation, and even blindness.

Lutein and zeaxanthin

Incorporating leafy green vegetables like spinach, kale, and watercress, which are rich in antioxidants such as lutein and zeaxanthin, is beneficial for the macula in the retina. This helps children maintain sharp vision, prevents macular degeneration, and reduces the harmful effects of blue light.

In fact, lutein acts as a natural sunscreen, absorbing excess light energy from entering the eyes. Besides leafy green vegetables, other foods rich in this antioxidant include berries, eggs, and broccoli.

Omega-3 fatty acids

Omega-3 fatty acids help develop vision and strengthen children's eye health. Among the omega-3 fatty acids is DHA, a type of fatty acid that helps maintain the structure and function of the retina. DHA is found in breast milk and some infant formulas. Omega-3 fatty acids are abundant in fatty fish, such as salmon, and nuts like almonds, chia seeds, and walnuts.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that helps protect the eyes from harmful free radicals and is involved in the regeneration of other antioxidants such as vitamin E. Vitamin C plays a crucial role in the health of blood vessels in the eyes and cornea. Foods rich in vitamin C include oranges, grapefruits, kiwis, and lemons, according to Healthline .
