Strengthening family bonds in the digital age

In modern life, technology is present in almost every aspect of family life. The image of everyone holding a smartphone has become commonplace. Technology helps people connect faster and access information more easily, but it also inadvertently creates invisible distances between family members if there is no balance in its use.

Strengthening family bonds in the digital age

Art workshops and outdoor experiences help parents and children talk, share, and bond more in the digital age.

It's not uncommon to see this scene in many families today: family members sitting next to each other, yet each lost in their own world behind their phone screens. Parents are busy with work or browsing social media, while children are engrossed in short videos, online games, or conversations with friends on social media platforms. Face-to-face family conversations are becoming less frequent, time spent together is decreasing, and sharing among family members is becoming more limited. "My husband and I are quite busy with work, so sometimes we don't have much time to talk to our children. Outside of school hours, they often prefer using their phones for entertainment and chatting with friends, so sometimes I feel like I don't really understand them. I'm quite worried, but I don't know how to find a balance," shared Ms. Nguyen Thanh Tam from Hac Thanh ward.

This isn't just Tâm's family story; it's a common concern for many families in the digital age. As electronic devices become an indispensable part of life, maintaining connections between family members becomes more challenging. Faced with this reality, many families are proactively seeking ways to create more bonding time. One solution many parents choose is enrolling their children in outdoor activities, soft skills classes, or hands-on experience programs.

Right after her child's summer vacation began, Ms. Nguyen Thi Tram from Hac Thanh ward dedicated an entire afternoon to participating in the art workshop "Little Brush - Confidently Shining" at Simba Garden with her child. For her, this was not simply an experiential activity for young children, but also a rare opportunity for mother and child to truly spend time together after busy days. They chose colors, completed the painting, and talked to each other throughout the activity. What surprised Ms. Tram was not only her child's enthusiasm but also her creativity and presentation skills, which she had never noticed before. "Normally, I'm quite busy with work, so I rarely have time to sit down and do something complete with my child. When participating in the workshop, I saw that my child was much more enthusiastic, and I also had the opportunity to understand her thoughts and feelings and discover her unique talents," Ms. Tram shared.

However, from another perspective, technology is not entirely the cause of family relationships becoming distant. In many cases, technology acts as a bridge, helping family members maintain connection when they are far apart. Currently, along with the development of society, the Vietnamese family model has also undergone many changes. According to data from

According to Vietnam News in 2025, the nuclear family trend is becoming increasingly popular as many young couples choose to live separately instead of with their parents or grandparents as before.

Furthermore, many young people study and work far from home, or even live abroad, causing the geographical distance between family members to widen. In this context, technology has become an important tool for maintaining family connections. Video calls, text messages, and online chats allow grandparents to see their grandchildren every day, and parents to check in with their children even from hundreds of kilometers away. Many families maintain the habit of video calling every evening to chat and share daily stories as a way to preserve their relationships.

The important thing isn't whether technology is good or bad, but how each family uses it. If misused, technology can easily lead to dependence, reduced direct interaction, and negatively impact relationships. But if used correctly, technology can still be a positive tool for family connection. To build strong bonds in the digital age, it's essential for each family to create a balance between the online world and real life. Parents should not only control their children's screen time but also set a good example in their technology use. Phone-free meals, weekend outings, shared experiences, or simply daily conversations are all ways to bring family members closer together.

In modern society, technology will continue to develop and become an indispensable part of life. But no matter how technology changes, the value of caring, sharing, and genuine connections within the family will always remain paramount. Because after all, family is not just a place to return to, but also a place that nurtures emotions, love, and companionship between people.
