The Nguyen Dynasty considered Hai Van Pass and Hai Van Mountain to be a strategically important location in Thuan Hoa - Phu Xuan - Hue, both militarily and in terms of transportation, serving as the southern gateway to this region.

Hai Van Pass was built in the 7th year of Minh Mang's reign (1826), located on the summit of Hai Van Pass, west of Hai Van Mountain, at the point where the two peaks of Hai Van Mountain (east) and Ba Son (west) meet, at an altitude of 496m above sea level.

Hai Van Pass, part of the Bach Ma - Hai Van mountain range, is located in Lang Co town, Phu Loc district (Thua Thien Hue province) and Hoa Hiep Bac ward, Lien Chieu district (Da Nang city).

From Hai Van Pass, looking south, you can see Da Nang with Tien Sa Port - Son Tra Peninsula, and long stretches of white sandy beaches along the coast. Looking north, you can see the picturesque Lang Co Bay and the winding mountain passes.

In 2017, Hai Van Pass was classified as a national historical site. This August, Hai Van Pass reopened to the public after nearly three years of restoration work.
