
The elderly people of Cam Thanh commune will never forget the events of September 27, 1964, when the masses, armed with coconut shell guns and with the support of internal collaborators, quickly seized the commune's administrative committee headquarters and, together with the revolutionary base, paralyzed the Saigon government's apparatus in the villages.
On the night of September 27th, the people of Cam Thanh commune gathered at Thanh Nhut village communal house for a rally declaring the liberation of Cam Thanh.
The liberation of Cam Thanh commune marked the beginning of the "Eliminate hamlets, break the enemy's grip" movement to liberate rural communes in Hoi An. The liberation of Cam Thanh was significant not only for the army and people of Cam Thanh but also had strategic importance for the revolutionary movement of Hoi An.
Cam Thanh became a base, serving as both the front line and rear base for Hoi An throughout more than 10 years of resistance against the US until the reunification of the country.
Emerging from the war, faced with barren land, acidic soil, and saline water, the people here launched another economic "uprising."
According to Mr. Bui Minh Thuan, Secretary of the Party Committee of Cam Thanh commune, from being a locality that regularly received relief during the rainy and stormy season, Cam Thanh now only has 5 poor households receiving social welfare (accounting for 0.2%) and 7 near-poor households (0.29%).
In 2020, Cam Thanh commune was recognized as an advanced new rural commune; it is striving for all 6 villages to meet the standards of model new rural villages and to build the commune into a model new rural commune by 2025.
The mangrove forests that once "sheltered soldiers and surrounded the enemy" in Cam Thanh have now become a major tourist attraction. In 2023, the Bay Mau Mangrove Forest Historical and Cultural Relic Area in Cam Thanh commune was recognized by UNESCO as a "Typical Asian- Pacific Tourist Destination".

In 2024, the basket boat experience in Cam Thanh coconut forest was ranked among the top 25 most attractive boat experiences in the world. The craft of building bamboo and coconut houses in Cam Thanh has also recently been recognized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism as a national intangible cultural heritage.
The development of tourism has brought immense benefits to local communities, creating significant changes and considerably improving people's lives.
In 2023, the total revenue from tourism and service activities in Cam Thanh commune reached approximately 465 billion VND. Of this, revenue from entrance ticket sales reached 27.5 billion VND, revenue from accommodation activities reached over 71.8 billion VND, and revenue from transportation activities reached approximately 91.9 billion VND.
"No one expected that, from a poor, desolate rural area, Cam Thanh now has 103 operating accommodation establishments of all types such as hotels, villas, homestays… with more than 1,000 rooms," Mr. Thuan said.
Mr. Tran Anh, Secretary of the City Party Committee and Chairman of the People's Council of Hoi An City, said that the Resolution of the City Party Congress had determined, starting from 2005, to develop Cam Thanh into a unique rural village associated with sustainable preservation for the future, maintaining an intact ecological space of the coastal estuary region.
The effort to build Cam Thanh into an ecological, prosperous, and civilized village is the determination and commitment of everyone in Cam Thanh to the past and to previous generations, in order to live up to the spirit of the homeland's uprising.
